Saturday girls basketball report: Aquinas holds off second-half charge from Bangor

BANGOR — Aquinas High School senior Emma Dobbins turned an offensive rebound into a key basket and ended Bangor’s next possession with a defensive rebound at the other end in the final 42.3 seconds of a 65-58 nonconference victory over the Cardinals on Saturday.

The Blugolds led by as many as 15 points in the second half before Bangor battled back and twice cut its deficit to one possession.

The Cardinals first drew to within 57-54 when sophomore September Harris scored in the lane with 1:41 left and made the score 58-55. when senior Aubrey Langrehr turned an offensive rebound into a foul and point with 44.5 seconds to go.

Aquinas sophomore Ava Fernholz drew a foul at the other end and made her first free throw before missing the second. Dobbins was there for the board and putback for a 61-55 advantage and rebounds a missed 3-pointer to put the ball back in her team’s possession.

Those are game-changing opportunities,” Aquinas coach Dave Donarski said of the Dobbins plays. “The poor kid was getting beat up by me screaming at her because we needed that, and she stepped up and was dynamite when it mattered. The putback was the end.”

Junior Sammy Davis had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Blugolds (2-3), who stopped a three-game losing streak. Sophomore teammate Olivia Passehl made three 3-pointers for 11 points, and Fernholz made five free throws in the final 42.3 seconds.

The Cardinals (4-2) had a four-game win streak snapped and were led by senior Anna Fronk’s four 3-pointers and 18 points. Langrehr finished with 10 and junior Kennedy Hamilton and sophomore Kiera Cavadini nine apiece.

West Salem 56, Hudson 46

RIVER FALLS — The Panthers (6-1) won their third game in a row by posting a win at UW-River Falls.

Senior Megan Johnson scored 19 points, and Sydney Quick made 11 of 13 free throws on her way to 13 points. Josie Brudos also made a 3-pointer and scored 13 for West Salem, which trailed 25-20 at halftime before dominating the second half.

DeForest 46, Central 43

Junior Alahnna Simpson scored 10 of her team-high 13 points in the second half for the RiverHawks (1-2), who outscored the Norskies by three points in the second half at the Mark Sutton Memorial Gymnasium.

Sophomore Ellie Gillitzer reached double figures for the first time this season and scored 10 points, while senior Zaya Whitaker added eight.

De Soto 54, Hillsboro 46

WISCONSIN DELLS — Sophomore Kylee Venner scored 26 points for the Pirates (3-1), who beat the Tigers at JustAGame Fieldhouse for their third straight victory.

Eau Claire Immanuel 55, Whitehall 46

WHITEHALL — The Norse (2-3) couldn’t get out of a 13-point hole it faced after one half.

Freshman Paige Lisowski scored a team-high 21 points for Whitehall, making two 3-pointers in the first half and three more in the second.
