LA CROSSE — The Central High School floor hockey team scored two goals in the final five minutes to force overtime before it ended up tying Holmen 4-4 in an ASL game at Central on Thursday.
Joe Mayer scored all of the RiverHawks goals as they came from behind against the Vikings, who were playing their first game of the season. The teams played a five-minute sudden death that left the game a tie.
Kian Carlisle, and Nick Hermann scored goals for Holmen to give it a 2-1 lead before one of Mayer’s goals tied the score.
Carlisle scored another goal with an assist from Hermann, and Aiden Romskog added another for the 4-2 lead before Mayer came back with his third and fourth goals.
Josh Hass had 26 saves in goal for Central, and Carter Van Lin made things difficult on the RiverHawks with his play on goal for Holmen.
Mayer’s day was made easier with offensive help from Thomas Spah and Callie Reinhart, whose passing and hustle allowed Mayer the space he needed to find scoring opportunities. Dominic Dolan and Mara Peterson helped Hass by clearing the puck before it reached him on several plays.
Gabriella Villareal was a defensive force for the Vikings and even went into the splits to steal the puck on one occasion. Josie Colombo, Jett Lewis and Gabe Schams also helped the defense in front of Van Lin.
Andrew Bell came close on attempts to score the winning goal for Holmen several times in overtime.
