Tuesday basketball report: La Crosse Aquinas gets sweep of Sparta on cold night

SPARTA — Aquinas High School junior Sammy Davis and sophomore Ava Fernholz picked up they left off at Friday’s Midwest Players Classic as they shifted back to MVC competition on Tuesday.

On an evening with few events taking place due to extreme cold that wiped out school throughout the Coulee Region, the Blugolds traveled to play Sparta and came away with a 75-33 victory.

Davis had 23 points, 14 rebounds and five steals and Fernholz 13 points, 11 steals and eight assists as first-place Aquinas (12-3, 6-0) won its 11th straight game and pushed its conference win streak to 108 games.

Davis and Fernholz also led the Blugolds to an impressive nonconference victory over West Salem at the La Crosse Center late last week. Davis averaged 21 points and 15 rebounds in the wins over the Panthers and Spartans.

They received more help from sophomore Olivia Passehl in the win over the Spartans. Passehl made five of her team’s nine 3-pointers on her way to 19 points. She made three 3s in the first half and two more in the second as the Blugolds extended a 40-20 halftime lead.

Caledonia 76, Chatfield 45

CHATFIELD — The Warriors (17-2) stretched their winning streak to 17 games and gave coach Scott Sorenson the 400th victory of his career by beating the Gophers.

Senior Aubrie Klug also scored her 1,000th point for Caledonia.

BOYS

Aquinas 79, Sparta 57

LA CROSSE — The Blugolds (13-1, 3-1) forced a three-way tie for second place in the conference with a victory over the visiting Spartans (9-5, 1-3).

Nine players scored for Aquinas, which had a 36-26 lead after one half and finished with eight 3-pointers.

Junior Logan Becker scored a team-high 16 points and made two of those 3s. Sophomore Calvin Bahr added 15 points and senior Brayden Young 13 with three 3-pointers.

Trey Bahr, Vincent Bahr and Finley Strom all scored nine for the Blugolds, who are tied with Holmen and Central for second place. All three are a half-game behind first-place Onalaska (4-1).
