Thursday softball report: Onalaska wins second in a row, Central wins first behind 2 Gillitzer homers, and Rozek drives in 7 for Mustangs

ONALASKA — The Onalaska High School softball team scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to finish off an 11-1 victory over Aquinas at Jaycee Fields on Thursday.

Eight Onalaska players had at least one hit, and eight scored at least one run in the team’s second straight victory.

Right fielder MJ Heit was 1 for 3 with a home run, two runs batted in and a stolen bases, while pitcher Sydney Kraus and catcher Claire Weigel were both 2 for 2. Weigel and second baseman Kylie Gilhausen both drove in two runs for the Hilltoppers (2-0, 2-0 MVC), who received a triple from Kraus and a double from third baseman Zoe Koonce-O’Kane.

Heit ended the game with a two-out, two-run homer to center field in the fifth.

Kraus held Aquinas (1-2, 0-2) to two hits and struck out 10 while walking two and allowing one unearned run.

Shortstop Ava Fernholz singled and stole a base for the Blugolds. Pitcher Brynn Grabowski drove Fernholz in for the run in the first inning.

Central 8, Sparta 4

LA CROSSE — The RiverHawks (1-3, 1-0 MVC) picked up their first win of the season in their first conference game by pulling away from a close one with three runs in the bottom of the sixth at State Road Elementary.

Shortstop Ellie Gillitzer was 2 for 3 with two home runs that brought home four runs for Central. She hit one two-run homer to center field in the first and hit another to the same spot in the third.

Catcher Morgan Pacl was 4 for 4 with a double and two runs driven in, first baseman Norah Holkup was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, and Abby Wurm tripled and scored twice while going 2 for 3.

Melrose-Mindoro 20, Whitehall 9 (5)

WHITEHALL — Second baseman/pitcher Bella Rozek doubled, tripled and drove in seven runs while going 3 for 5 and scoring three times for the Mustangs (3-0) in a win over the Norse.

Rozek doubled home two runs in the first, singled home one in the second, tripled home three in the third and hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Right fielder Miranda Banse was 3 for 4, shortstop Cooper Zeman 2 for 3 with two stolen bases, four runs scored, a double and two runs driven in, and pitcher Opal Buchanan went 2 for 5 with two runs driven in.

Catcher Anna Radcliffe and Eva Osgood also drove in two runs apiece for Melrose-Mindoro. Osgood and Kelsey Young also doubled once each, and Young scored four times.

West Salem 17, Black River Falls 1 (5)

BLACK RIVER FALLS — The Panthers (4-1, 2-1 Coulee) blasted the Tigers and pulled away with an eight-run third inning.

Pitcher/shortstop Josie Brudos and second baseman Brooklyn Haverly-Ghelfi each hit a home run for West Salem, which had 14 hits and allowed Black River Falls to score once in the third inning.

First baseman Madison Elsen was 3 for 4 with a double and four runs driven in, and right fielder Kylie Elsen went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two driven in.

Ghelfi’s three-run blast came in the fifth inning, and Brudos led the game off with a solo shot to left field.
Brudos also pitched 4 1/3 innings and finished with eight strikeouts, one walk, two hits and one earned run allowed.

Center fielder Brooklyn Lee, who stole two bases, doubled home three runs on a hit to left and gave the Panthers a 10-0 lead in the third, and left fielder Mara McNaughton doubled.

Wisconsin Rapids 12, Holmen 4
Wisconsin Rapids 10, Holmen 0 (5)

WISCONSIN RAPIDS — The Vikings (1-2) took two on the chin in a nonconference road trip.

Left fielder Sydney Cichosz doubled and drove in two runs, and pitcher Gabi Stuhr went 3 for 3 with an RBI in the first game.

Shortstop Macy Kline also had a hit and stole two bases in the opener, while catcher Avalee Euler had a hit and drove in a run.

Kline had Holmen’s only hit of the second game.

Tomah 10, Logan 0 (5)

TOMAH — The Rangers (1-2, 0-2 MVC) were shut down without a hit by Anna Wall, who struck out 12.

Second baseman Norah Keller drew a walk with one out in the top of the fifth to break up Wall’s bid at a perfect game.

De Soto 6, Luther 4

STODDARD — The Knights (1-2) were led by senior Rylee Weber, who was 3 for 4 with a triple, two stolen bases and two runs driven in.

Junior Alivia Flaherty was also 2 for 3 with a double and drove in a run. Junior Addy Palubicki struck out three and walked four.
