Tuesday softball: Mosser’s five hits propel Holmen to 11-run win in MVC opener; Zeman triples home winning run in 7th for Mustangs

LA CROSSE — The Holmen High School softball team began its season with a 16-5 MVC victory over Logan on Tuesday.

The Vikings (1-0) scored at least once in six of the seven innings and pushed their lead to double digits for good with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Junior first baseman Kaylee Mosser went 5 for 5 — all singles — and knocked in five runs for Holmen, which finished with 16 hits. Mosser also scored twice.

Thurd baseman Kaitlyn Weiss was 2 for 5 with a double and drove in three runs for the Vikings, who also received two hits from left fielder Harper Tengblad and shortstop Macy Kline. Kline also had a stolen base and scored four runs.

Second baseman Makenzie Nunemacher doubled and drove in three runs, and pitcher Gabi Stuhr added two hits. Stuhr and Tengblad each hit a double.

Stuhr struck out six, walked four and allowed four earned runs on eight hits.

The Rangers were led by two hits apiece from left fielder Norah Reineking and right fielder Cassidy Van Voorhis. Catcher Maria Weber doubled, and third baseman Kenna Streeck drove in two runs.

Center fielder Marisa McHugh also gave Holmen an impressive double play by catching a flay ball and doubling up the Logan runner at first base for the first two outs of the bottom of the third.

Melrose-Mindoro 5, Independence/Gilmanton 4

MELROSE — Senior shortstop Cooper Zeman tripled to center field after senior catcher Anna Radcliffe led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk to give the Mustangs (2-0) a win over the Indees.

Zeman went 3 for 3 with the RBI and added a double for Melrose-Mindoro, which lost a 4-0 lead by allowing four runs in the top of the sixth. Zeman also drew a walk and stole a base as the Mustangs made the most of their six hits.

Onalaska 10, Sparta 1

SPARTA — The Hilltoppers (1-0) used a four-run third inning to pull away from the Spartans in their first game of the season.

Sophomore Sydney Kraus went 3 for 5 with two triples, two runs scored an one driven in while striking out 14 and allowing one hit in a complete game. Kraus allowed one earned run and walked two.

Sophomore right fielder MJ Heit was 3 for 5 with a home run, a triple, three runs scored and one driven in from the leadoff spot for Onalaska. She led off the bottom of the sixth inning with an inside-the-park home run.
Second baseman Kylie Gilhausen, third baseman Zoe Koonce O’Kane and shortstop Sophia Larkin also had two hits each for the Hilltoppers. as Koonce O’Kane and left fielder Maryjane Flynn each drove in two runs.

West Salem 20, Black River Falls 6 (5)

WEST SALEM — Senior Josie Brudos, a Winona State commit, struck out seven, walked two and allowed one hit and one unearned run over four innings for the Panthers (3-1, 1-1 Coulee).

Brudos also doubled, tripled, hit a home run and drove in five runs as West Salem posted its first conference win. Brudos hit a solo home run in the first, a two-run triple in the third and a two-run double in the fourth. She also reached on an error in the first.

The Panthers scored 11 runs in the first inning, four in the third and five in the fourth.

Center fielder Brooklyn Lee was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and a stolen base, third baseman Brooklyn Haverly-Ghelfi was 2 for 3 and drove in four runs, and right fielder Kylie Elsen went 2 for 2 with a double, three runs scored and two runs driven in.

Caledonia 21, Rushford-Peterson 0 (4)

RUSHFORD — Junior Avery Augedahl pitched a one hitter and struck out 10 and went 3 for 4 with a triple, two singles and three runs driven in for the Warriors (2-0).

Junior first baseman Elsa Blum doubled three times and drove in five runs during a 3-for-3 performance amid the Caledonia offense’s 21-hit attack.

Eight of the Warriors’ hits went for extra bases. Third baseman Paizley Lange and second baseman Vivian Kittleson also had three hits apiece, and Lange doubled and drove in two runs.

Ashlynn Reinhart doubled and went 2 for 4, Adrienne Lange tripled, and Lily Augedahl and Nora Staggemeyer both finished with two hits.

Luther 10, Central 9

ONALASKA — Junior Karlie Bauer went 3 for 5 with a double and drove in two runs for the Knights in a win over the visiting RiverHawks.

Senior teammate Rylee Weber was 4 for 5, stole three bases and drove in a run, while junior Addy Palubicki struck out 10 batters.

Tomah 9, Aquinas 1

LA CROSSE — The Blugolds scored once in the fourth inning and were only able to get two hits.

First baseman Ava Scholze and right fielder Macey Johnson each had one hit for Aquinas, and Scholze drove in shortstop Ava Fernholz for the run.

Scholze’s single broke up a no-hitter in the fourth inning, and Johnson’s hit was her first as a varsity player and came in the fifth.

Tomah pitcher Anna Wall finished with 20 strikeouts and one walk.
