WIAA football playoffs: Logan fights hard against top seed, but Rangers, Central, West Salem get eliminated in second round

WAUKESHA — The Logan High School football team put a scare in an elite program from the other side of the state on Friday night, but a tough second half brought the Rangers’ season to an end in the second round of the WIAA Division 3 playoffs.

Fourth-seeded Logan scored two touchdowns in the first half and took a lead to the third quarter, but the top-seeded Crusaders scored 24 points in the second half to beat the Rangers 31-22 at Carroll University’s Haertel Field.

Senior Maxim Roberts scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter and a 1-yard run in the second quarter. Owen Check caught a 3-yard conversion pass from Tommy Check after the second touchdown for a 14-7 lead that Logan took to halftime.

Catholic Memorial (10-1), which won its 10th game in a row, scored 10 points in the third quarter and added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth to seize control.

Roberts scored his third touchdown on za 2-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Jackson Bosch caught a conversion pass from Check to get to the final margin with 5 minutes, 58 seconds left.

Roberts finished with 187 of Logan’s 252 rushing yards and the 19th, 20th and 21st touchdowns of his season.

Check added 65 rushing yards on 11 carries and completed 5 of 12 passes for 93 yards. Senior Andrew Stanton had two catches for 73 yards to lead Logan receivers.

The Crusaders were held to 42 rushing yards on 34 carries, but quarterback Dalton Steinke completed 11 of 13 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns.

River Falls 50, Central 24

RIVER FALLS — The top-seeded Wildcats (10-1) had 556 total yards, took advantage of an early injury to Central senior quarterback Christian Rudrud and advanced with a win at Futsal Field on the campus of UW-River Falls.

Junior Gabe Servais absorbed the brunt of the offensive load after Rudrud’s injury and finished with 144 rushing yards on 15 carries and 69 passing yards on 5-for-8 passing.

Central was within 14-8 after one quarter, but River Falls scored 27 points in the second to pull away for a 41-16 halftime lead.

Rudrud did throw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Connor Groth in the first quarter to get the RiverHawks within 14-8, and Servais had a 75-yard touchdown rin early in the second quarter before the Wildcats scored three more times before halftime.

Central scored its final touchdown when junior Beckett Allert completed a 2-yard scoring pass to junior Avant Williams in the third quarter. Williams finished with four catches for 70 yards.

Division 4
Little Chute 49, West Salem 20

LITTLE CHUTE — The second-seeded Mustangs (10-1) scored 21 points in the first quarter and reached the end zone the first seven times they had the ball to end the Panthers’ season at 8-3.

Junior quarterback Drew McConkey had a touchdown pass and a touchdown catch for West Salem, which allowed more than 400 rushing yards in the first half.

McConkey completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to senior Spencer Kammel early in the second quarter to get the Panthers within 21-7 and caught a 46-yard pass from junior Jameson Skifton in the third quarter to produce the final score.

Skifton also ran a kickoff back 85 yards for a second-quarter touchdown that cut the Little Chute lead to 42-14.
