MADISON — West Salem High School senior Kendall Sullivan split two Division 2 matches at the WIAA state girls tennis tournament on Friday after winning her first-round match Thursday and is still alive for fifth place at the Nielsen Tennis Center.
Sullivan (28-3) beat Eau Claire Regis senior Therese Kern (18-3), who is seeded seventh, by scores of 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 in the second round. She then lost to top-seeded Susanna Hundt (28-0), a junior from Chesterton Academy 6-2, 6-0 in the third round.
Sullivan qualified to play for fifth place on Saturday and will have to win twice to accomplish the goal. She opens with fifth-seeded Caroline Gerovac (22-9) of New Berlin West in an 8:30 a.m. match.
Onalaska Luther seniors Emma Kolb, Kenzie Olson and Keira Paus also played Friday after advancing through Thursday’s first round.
Kolb (29-5) lost her second-round match to second-seeded Sasha Quandt (17-0) of Oshkosh Lourdes 6-1, 6-2. Quandt went on to win her third-round match in straight sets, too.
Olson and Paus (26-8) also lost their second-round doubles match in straight sets. They were matched up with seventh-seeded Charlotte Bullard and Melanie Pellegrino of Kohler and were defeated 6-3, 6-2.
