DE SOTO — Austin DeFlorian scored on the first play from scrimmage, and teammate Finn Wrobel followed that up with two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns as the De Soto High School football team thrashed Monticello 64-7 in a Ridge and Valley Conference game Friday afternoon.
DeFlorian scored from 42 yards out on the first snap, and the Pirates (4-1 overall, 4-1 conference) scored 52 points in the first half to beat the Ponies (0-6, 0-5) and move into a tie with Belmont for second place in the conference.
DeFlorian finished with six carries for 92 yards and the touchdown — his ninth of the season.
Wrobel completed three of six passes for 49 yards and two touchdowns — both to senior Jackson Trussoni, who also caught a TD pass from Bryce Schultz. Trussoni had three catches for 72 yards and three touchdowns in a game De Soto led 36-0 after one quarter.
“We had them outmatched on a lot of areas, especially with our senior crew,” De Soto coach Ev Wick said. “Sometimes that scares you, too, coming in as a favorite, and then we had Homecoming (week) on top of it, and you never really know what you’re gonna get there.
“But then we scored on the first play, and that kind of takes the wind out of their sails. We thought we had something with that play this week in practice.”
Sophomore quarterback Eli Brosinski also scored twice for the Pirates on second-half runs of 56 and 12 yards.
Wrobel’s runs covered 3 and 18 yards and were his fourth and fifth of the season. He has completed 10 touchdown passes this season.
