High school girls basketball: A look at the Aquinas MVC winning streak

The Aquinas High School girls basketball team is attempting to complete its 10th straight undefeated MVC season when it hosts Central tonight at the Reinhart Athletic Complex.

The RiverHawks (18-5, 9-2 MVC) spent most of this season ranked among the state’s top 10 in Division 2 for the Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll, and the Blugolds (21-2, 11-0) enter as the fourth-ranked team in Division 3.

Here is a look at some of the milestone games during a winning streak that has reached 125 games and some of the players who have had big performances in those games:

No. 1: The Blugolds jump put to a 24-point halftime lead before beating Logan 67-39 on Dec. 15, 2015. Kyah Steiner scored 19 points, and Maeve Miller and Whittni Rezin added 10 each.

No. 10: Aquinas beats Tomah 55-31 on Feb. 12, 2016 to clinch at least a share of a championship it would soon win outright. Madessa Collins scored 15 points, Maeve Miller added 11 and Kyah Steiner 10.

No. 20: The Blugolds outscored Central by 24 points in the second half to beat Central 62-36 on Feb. 2, 2017. Kyah Steiner’s 18 points led the team, and Jessa Peterson added 11.

No. 25: The team’s second win of the season is a 81-25 decision over Logan on Dec. 12, 2017. Lexi Donarski’s 18 points lead the way, and Taylor Theusch hits four 3-pointers on her way to 12. Courtney Becker also scored 11 points for Aquinas.

No. 30: Tomah scored just 16 second-half points as the Blugolds pull away for a 79-36 victory behind Lexi Donarski’s 21 points on Jan. 16, 2018. Jessa Peterson scored 12 on four 3s and Madessa Collins and Kyah Steiner added 11 each.

No. 40: The Blugolds beat Holmen 68-25 on Jan. 8, 2019 and received 21 points and 8 assists from Lexi Donarski. Taylor Theusch made three 3s and scored 17, and Courtney Becker added 10 points and 6 rebounds.

No. 50: Lexi Donarski had 23 points and 8 steals and Courtney Becker 23 points and 7 rebounds in the Blugolds’ 94-41 win over Sparta on Dec. 17, 2019. Taylor Theusch made four 3s and added 22 points.

No. 60: Aquinas held Sparta to 8 first-half points in reached a new milestone with a 64-31 victory on Dec. 29, 2020. Jacy Weisbrod made five 3-pointers and scored 17 points while Macy Donarski had 15 points and Bri Bahr 10.

No. 70: The Blugolds benefitted from huge games by Jacy Weisbrod — six 3-pointers while scoring 32 points and grabbing 14 rebounds — and Macy Donarski 21 points and 4 steals — to beat Sparta 69-38 on Jan. 4, 2022.

No. 75: Aquinas was pushed before beating Logan 55-41 on Feb. 4, 2022. Jacy Weisbrod made three 3s to score 25 points and added 6 rebounds. Macy Donarski had 15 points, 7 steals and 6 assists, and Danica Silcox made three 3s and scored 12.

No. 80: The Blugolds doubled up Central 64-32 on Dec. 9, 2022 thanks to 17 points apiece from Macy Donarski and Autumn Passehl. Passehl made four 3-pointers, Donarski ad 7 rebounds and 6 assists, and Barcha Hnizdilova had 10 rebounds.

No. 90: Aquinas closed off an unbeaten MVC championship with a 78-18 win over Logan on Feb. 16, 2023. Sammy Davis had 18 points, Macy Donarski 16 with 11 assists and 7 steals, Autumn Passehl 14 points with four 3s and Barcha Hnizdilova 10 points with 8 rebounds and 7 steals.

No. 100: An 81-53 victory at Holmen allowed the Blugolds to reach the century mark on Feb. 1, 2024. Sammy Davis had 26 points, 9 rebounds and 6 steals, Maddie Murphy 15 points on five 3s, Ava Fernholz 12 points and Emma Dobbins 11 points with three 3s.

No. 110: Aquinas beat Holmen 69-58 with Kathryn Savoldelli’s 20 points and 6 rebounds leading the way on Jan. 28, 2025. Sammy Davis scored 18 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, and Olivia Passehl finished with 11 points.

No. 120: The Blugolds emerged from a tough battle against Central with a 50-45 on Jan. 20. Ava Fernholz scored 18 points, and Sammy Davis had 12 points and 9 rebounds, and Liv Dickinson made three 3s for 9 points.

No. 125: Aquinas reached its current point with an 84-28 win over Logan on Thursday. The Blugolds clinched the outright MVC title. Sammy Davis had 24 points and 7 rebounds, and Liv Dickinson 23 points with seven 3-pointers.
