ONALASKA — The Onalaska/La Crosse co-op boys hockey team clinched the outright championship in the Western Wisconsin Hockey Conference with a 9-0 thrashing of Viroqua at the OmniCenter on Thursday.
The Hilltoppers (16-2, 8-0 WWHC) have a three-game lead on the second-place Avalanche (11-10, 5-3) with two conference games to go after extending their winning streak to four games.
Onalaska/La Crosse scored four goals in the first period and four more in the second.
Central junior Liam Branson scored three goals and assisted on another for the Hilltoppers, who had a 52-12 advantage in shots. Branson scored the 13th, 14th and 15th goals of his season and recorded his 18th assist.
Onalaska junior Grayson Andel had two goals and two assists and Onalaska senior Carter Johnson two goals and one assist. Onalaska senior Rylan Tomashek scored once but assisted on four goals for Onalaska/La Crosse. Onalaska freshman Alex Sammann also scored.
Central junior Parker Tripp posted another shutout in goal and stopped all 12 shots sent his way. He has allowed nine goals over his past 10 games.
Avalanche 5, Tomah/Sparta 3
TOMAH — The Aquinas/Holmen co-op used three second-period goals to hold off Tomah/Sparta at the Tomah Ice Center.
Five players scored once each for the Avalanche (11-10, 5-3), who are battling for second place in the WWHC.
Jaxson Reilly, Corbin Meyer, Cole Van Lin, James Siegert and Jack Franzini scored goals for the Avalanche. Van Lin, a Holmen senior, added two assists and Meyer, a Holmen junior, added one.
Siegert’s goal was his 19th of the season, and that leads couleesports.com teams.
GIRLS
Wisconsin Valley Union 3, Coulee Region 2
WEST SALEM — The Cyclones (3-13-2) never led at the Panther Den.
Bangor senior Brooke Borkenhagen scored with assists from Ava Ferguson and Rylee Hoehn to get Coulee Region within 2-1 at 13:17 of the second period.
Holmen junior Maycee Marson then made it a 3-2 game at 9:12 of the third when she scored on a power play with the help of Borkenhagen and Hoehn.
West Salem junior Grace Johnsrude stopped 37 shots in goal for the Cyclones.
