Monday girls basketball: Central remains unbeaten, Onalaska, Mel-Min, Holmen and West Salem add wins

LA CROSSE — The Central High School girls basketball team, which held down the N0. 6 position in this week’s Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll, kept its unbeaten record intact with a 72-37 nonconference victory over Wisconsin Rapids on Monday.

Senior Alahnna Simpson scored 22 points for the second game in a row, and the RiverHawks (6-0) had a 41-23 lead after one half at the Mark Sutton Memorial Gymnasium.

Simpson is averaging 22.2 points per game and entered the game averaging 8.2 rebounds per game for Central, which plays in an invitational hosted by Sauk Prairie on Dec. 29-30.

Freshman Ellie Apuan added 17 points to push her per-game scoring to 13.0.

Onalaska 81, Wautoma 15

ONALASKA — The Hilltoppers (6-3) won for the fourth time in five games and bounced back from an MVC loss to Aquinas with a one-sided victory over the Hornets (0-10).

Sophomore Kayla Ketelhut scored a game-high 21 points for Onalaska, which allowed eight points in the first half and seven in the second. She scored 14 points as the Hilltoppers took a 46-8 lead after one half.

Eleven players scored for Onalaska, and junior Finley Walters added 11 points. Junior Lauren Pica had 10 and sophomore Avery Cowley nine for the Hilltoppers, who host Prairie du Chien (1-5) on Dec. 30.

Melrose-Mindoro 58, G-E-T 40

GALESVILLE — The Mustangs (4-4) climbed back to the .500 mark by winning their second game in a row.
Melrose-Mindoro built a 12-point lead by the end of the half and extended it from there.

Senior Cooper Zeman knocked down five 3-ointers on her way to a team-high 22 points for the Mustangs, who had three double-figure scorers. Zeman made four 3s in the first half and had 14 of her points as Melrose-Mindoro built its 27-15 halftime lead.

Senior Anna Radcliffe added 20 points and senior Calysta Bautch 14.

Holmen 28, D.C. Everest 27

HOLMEN — The Vikings (5-3) collected their second straight victory by outlasting the Evergreens (4-4) at the Bernie L. Ferry Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Makenzie Nunemacher made two 3-pointers and scored a team-high 14 points for Holmen, which led 13-10 after one half. Senior Macy Kline added seven points for the Vikings, who next play at Onalaska Luther on Dec. 26.

West Salem 79, Logan 41

LA CROSSE — The Panthers (4-2) pushed their winning streak to four games behind a big game from senior Josie Brudos at the Steve Hole Field House.

Brudos made six 3-pointers and poured in a game-high 28 points for West Salem, which pulled away from a nine-point halftime lead. Brudos scored 20 points in the first half and eight in the second.

Sophomore Ava Hendrickson helped the Panthers pull away in the second half with 13 of her 21 points. Sophomore Amelia Karr also scored 10 for the Panthers.

The Rangers (1-6) hung around in the first half behind junior Emily Bacon’s four 3-pointers. She scored a team-high 12 points on those shots but was held without a point after halftime.

Logan senior Lydia Mason had nine of her 11 points in the first half.
