Saturday wrestling: Holmen, West Salem/Bangor, G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro all win invitationals

MADISON — The Holmen High School boys wrestling team crowned three champions and won the overall championship during Saturday’s Badger State Invitational at the Alliant Energy Center.

The Vikings scored 244 points and had bracket winners in freshman Brendan Henderson at 113 pounds, sophomore Rex Lancaster at 120 and sophomore Nathan Henderson at 138.

Holmen put five competitors in the top five and finished comfortably ahead of second-place Hortonville (2-5) and third-place Waunakee (152).

Brendan Henderson (14-0) followed up a first-round bye with three pins and a technical fall to win at 113. Henderson beat Rochester Century’s Lane Royston (10-2) 15-0 for the title.

Lancaster (12-2) pinned his first two opponents after a bye and followed it up with a technical fall in the semifinals and 13-3 major decision over Wilmot’s Reece Vendegna (12-2) in the 120 final.

Nathan Henderson (14-0), ranked first at 138 in Division 1 by Wisconsin Grappler, advanced to the championship bout with two technical falls and a decision. He then took down Dodgeville’s Rhet Spurley (16-2) once each on the first and second periods before a couple of third-period escapes gave him an 8-6 win. Spurley is ranked third in Division 3.

Logan/Central junior Calvin Arentz also won a bracket with a couple of pins, a decision and a major decision at 175. Arentz (11-1) won the title by beating Holmen junior Colin Griffin (6-6) by a score of 10-2.

Holmen also received a runner-up finish from freshman Brady Needham (10-5, 106), a third-place performance from junior Brock Needham (13-2, 132) and fourt-place showin from senior Jagger Jepson (10-4, 285).

E.H. Stech Invitational

WEST ALLIS — West Salem/Bangor’s co-op won the team championship with 233 points and had eight entrants place fifth or better in a two-day event.

Senior Mason Chambers led the way for the Catbirds by winning his bracket at 157. Chambers (15-2), ranked seventh in Division 2, trailed West Allis Hale senior Tristan North (15-3) — ranked second in Division 1 — by a 6-2 margin in the semifinal before rallying for a pin at 5:52. He then beat Waukesha North’s Ben Lauer (12-1) — ranked fourth in Division 2 — by pin at 3:15 in the championship match.

West Salem/Bangor also received second-place finishes from Landon Rieber (4-2, 120) and senior Caden Anderson (15-2, 190).

Senior Teghan Moore (16-2, 126), junior Justice Elam (15-4, 175) and senior Kaiden Stello (15-5, 285) all placed third, and junior Jarett Plomedahl (11-5, 150) was fourth. Junior Peyton King (12-8, 132) added fifth-place points.

Richland Center Invitational

RICHLAND CENTER — The G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro co-op claimed the team championship with 212.5 points and received an individual title from senior Colton Koss (11-1) at 132.

The Titans also received second-place performances from senior Koda Purney (9-3, 120), junior Brody Banse (10-2, 144), junior Aaron Dunigan (11-1, 190) and sophomore Brock Kaz (10-2, 285).

Senior Jayce Stetzer (10-2, 157) and sophomore Merek Windsor (6-6, 165) were both third.
