PRAIRIE DU SAC — The Holmen High School football team used a 35-point second quarter to score a 42-0 nonconference victory over Sauk Prairie on Friday and set up a big MVC matchup against Onalaska next week.
The Vikings (2-0) rushed for 362 yards and senior Eli Kane had 193 of them and three touchdowns in a rout against a team that shut out Baraboo 21-0 in Week 1.
Senior Colin Williams also carried six times for 108 yards and scored two touchdowns for Holmen, which hosts Onalaska (2-0) in a conference opener next week.
Williams and Kane each rushed for two touchdowns — Williams scored on runs of 33 and 59 yards and Kane on runs of 2 and 78 yards — and Williams connected with Jack Barth on an 82-yard touchdown to cap the big quarter.
The Eagles (1-1) were held to 32 rushing yards on 23 attempts and 138 total yards as the Vikings posted their second straight shutout.
Barth had two catches for 75 yards and carried four times for 31 yards after gaining 180 yards in last week’s win over Medford. Kane added a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Onalaska 36, Medford 0
ONALASKA — The Hilltoppers (2-0) scored 29 points in the first half and recorded their final touchdown early in the third quarter of a one-sided victory.
Medford managed just 143 total yards — all on the ground — and gave up 21 points in the second quarter.
Senior quarterback Ian Kowal completed 6 of 8 passes for 106 yards and three touchdowns for Onalaska, which had three players complete at least one pass and rushed for 208 yards. Kowal also caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Tristan Molling.
Junior Kaeson Stettler rushed for a team-high 86 yards, and Carson Zinnecker carried twice for 69 yards and a touchdown. Senior Luke Siegel had three catches for 64 yards and two touchdowns, and senior tight end Jackson Egan caught two more touchdown passes for the Hilltoppers.
West Salem 37, Tomah 6
TOMAH — Junior Drew McConkey completed 7 of 14 passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 55 yards and two more scores for the Panthers (1-1).
Junior running back Rory O’Neill ran for a team-high 145 yards on 12 carries, and junior Jameson Skifton had four catches for 101 yards and a touchdown for West Salem, which pulled away from a 16-6 halftime lead and held the Timberwolves (0-2) to 129 total yards.
Skifton also recorded an interception during the big defensive performance. Senior Landon Michlig had four tackles, a sack and forced and recovered a fumble.
Junior Isaiah Laack also forced and recovered a fumble while making eight tackles for the Panthers.
Melrose-Mindoro 42, Necedah 0
MELROSE — Junior Isaiah Kleinsmith rushed for 118 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Mustangs beat the Cardinals and are 2-0 for the first time since 2007.
Kleinsmith scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter and added touchdown runs of 57 yards in the third and 18 in the fourth as Melrose-Mindoro rolled to its fourth shutout since the beginning of last season. Kleinsmith also had seven catches for 92 yards.
Junior quarterback Brady Blaken added a 2-yard touchdown run — the first in the game — and a 49-yard interception return for a score in the second quarter for the Mustangs. Blaken finished with 69 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Ethan Her scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter and successfully kicked all six extra points.
Bangor 40, Onalaska Luther 6
BANGOR — The Knights (0-2) only managed one touchdown as the Cardinals (1-1) bounced back from a loss to Melrose-Mindoro in Week 1.
Onalaska Luther scored its touchdown in the fourth quarter and finished with 76 total yards.
Junior quarterback Jonny Holub passed for 48 yards and connected with junior Ashton Kendall for a passing touchdown. He completed 6 of 10 passes and was intercepted once.
Senior Zach Luehmann led the Knights with 14 total tackles, and junior Sam Schmeling added 12.
Rushford-Peterson 21, Caledonia 14
RUSHFORD — The Trojans scored in the third quarter to break a halftime tie and beat the Warriors in the first game between the teams since 2014.
Senior Jack Schmitz carried 13 times for 83 yards and two touchdowns for Caledonia, which tied the game at 14 when Schmitz scored from 17 yards out late in the second quarter.
The Trojans had taken the lead with two touchdowns after Schmitz scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter. The second R-P touchdown came on a fumble return.
The Trojans won with a touchdown drive in the third quarter of a game that included 308 total yards for the Caledonia offense.
Will Allen completed 7 of 16 passes for 100 yards, but R-P intercepted him once and Grant King once. King rushed for a team-high 98 yards on eight attempts.
