Tuesday’s volleyball report: Holmen, Caledonia pick up wins in conference openers

SPARTA — The Holmen High School girls volleyball team began its season by sweeping Sparta in an MVC match on Tuesday.

The Vikings, who placed second to Aquinas in last year’s standings before qualifying for the WIAA Division 1 state tournament, handed the Spartans a 25-15, 25-16, 25-20 defeat.

Senior Charley Casey led Holmen with nine kills and added nine digs to her stat line.

Senior Macy Kline had a team-high 12 digs, and junior Moira Linse and senior Hadley Teff added seven and six kills, respectively.

Senior Makenna McHugh led the Vikings with 16 assists and reached the 500 mark for her career.

Caledonia 3, Rushford-Peterson 0

CALEDONIA — The Warriors improved to 3-0 overall and won their Three Rivers Conference opener by beating the Trojans 25-8, 25-20, 25-20.

Junior outside hitter Elsa Blum led Caledonia with 10 kills, while junior middle hitter Adrienne Lange added eight and senior middle hitter Kensey King recorded seven.

Junior setter Avery Augedahl had 25 assists, senior libero Aubrie Klug 16 digs and freshman outside hitter Ashlyn Reinhart five service aces to go with eight digs and five kills.

Tomah 3, Central 0

LA CROSSE — The Timberwolves beat the RiverHawks 25-20, 25-22, 25-23 at the Mark Sutton Memorial Gymnasium.

Central’s attack was led by a nine-kill performance by junior McKenna Michaels and 18 kills and 24 assists from junior Ellie Gillitzer.

Senior Gabbi Zeeb had a team-high 24 digs and junior Mady Young six kills for the RiverHawks.
