BARABOO — The Holmen High School baseball team allowed a first-inning home run and never recovered in a 5-1 loss to top-seeded and fourth-ranked Sun Prairie East in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal on Tuesday.
The fourth-seeded Vikings (16-10-1) scored on a Brennon Metzler sacrifice fly that scored Abe Henderosn in the fourth inning, but they were only able to get four hits against East’s Joey Tamboli, who struck out seven and walked five.
Noah Oswald, Henderson, Tyler Rosenow and Brayden Wall had hits for Holmen, and Henderson’s was a double.
The Vikings used but Aaron Ploszay and Paul Goryl after Goryl knocked Ploszay out of the game in the third inning. Ploszay allowed three earned runs on three hits and three walks over 2 2/3 innings, while Goryl yielded one earned run on two hits and one walk over 3 1/3 innings. Goryl struck out four and Ploszay two.
East scored twice in the bottom of the third for a 4-0 lead before Metzler’s sacrifice fly followed a Henderson double, a Rosenow single and a Braeden Linse sacrifice bunt to move both into scoring position. East got out of that inning with a strikeout.
