MADISON — West Salem High School senior Kyle Hehli is the Coulee Region’s first WIAA singles tennis champion in more than 100 years after completing an unbeaten run through the Division 2 bracket on Saturday.

Hehli won semifinal and title matches — both in three sets — to complete a 27-2 season and give the area its first singles champ since Prairie du Chien’s Gordon Kieser won an open bracket in 1922.

Hehli also becomes the first player from the area to win two tennis championships after he won the Division 2 doubles bracket with his brother Jack three years ago. That was the area’s first doubles title since Onalaska’s Tim and Tom Gullikson won in 1967.

Hehli beat third-seeded Tommy Heinrich 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the title match, which he won 6-3, 1-6, 10-7 over Waukesha Catholic Memorial’s top-seeded Oliver Milleman.
