WEST SALEM — The West Salem High School girls soccer team picked up a big win over an opponent that had been playing very well to win the outright MVC championship on Thursday.
The Panthers (12-3-1, 9-1-1) scored once in the first half and once in the second to hand Holmen a 2-0 defeat and bounce back from a shutout loss at the hands of Onalaska earlier this week.
West Salem’s defense limited the Vikings (9-7-1, 7-4) to two shots on goal, and Baylee Faucett stopped both of them. Coach Lionel Karyea said he liked the intensity at which his defense played against a team that was coming off consecutive wins over Onalaska and state-ranked Central.
Junior Brisha Briseno scored the Panthers’ goal in the first half, and senior Sam Niemeier scored with an assist from senior Brynlee Kelly in the second. Kelly won the ball and set Niemeier up on a free kick.
Central 3, Onalaska 1
ONALASKA — The visiting RiverHawks (10-4-2, 6-4-1), who are ranked eighth in Division 2 by state coaches, pulled out a big win over the second-place Hilltoppers (10-5-1, 7-3-1).
Central scored the final three goals to come back from an early deficit after the teams tied at 1 during the regular season. Junior Grace Wilkerson scored twice and Mae Yang once for Central, which received eight saves in goal from Laura Lapp.
Isabella Cromheecke cored with an assist from Ellie Thesing for Onalaska, which received five saves from Avery Cowley.
