WIAA boys tennis subsectionals: Onalaska, Aquinas tied for second after first day of D1

WINONA — The Onalaska and Aquinas high school boys tennis teams scored 14 points and were part of a second-place tie in a WIAA Division 1 subsectional played at the Winona Tennis Center on Tuesday.

Only Reedsburg’s 16 points beat the Hilltoppers and Blugolds, who were also tied by Tomah. Teams take those points to the Madison Memorial Sectional at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Thursday with the hope of advancing to the state tournament.

Holmen and Central scored six points each on Tuesday.

Aquinas senior Anderson Fortney (28-2) won his only No. 1 singles match of the day 6-0, 6-0 to qualify for a semifinal matchup with Onalaska junior Lewis Go (14-10) on Thursday. Holmen senior Brandon McCormick (16-4) also advanced in the No. 1 singles bracket with a straight-set win in the first round.

Senior Mitchell Fortney (30-1) gives Aquinas a championship qualifier after winning twice in straight sets at No. 2 singles, and Onalaska junior Gavin Sommerfield (18-9) won twice to advance to the championship match at No. 3 singles. They are joined there at No. 4 singles by Onalaska senior Aayush Daithanker (18-10) at No. 4 singles.

The Aquinas No. 1 doubles team of Jaedan Silcox and Tegan Scott and Central No. 1 doubles team of Drake Wonderling and Mitchell Lund also advanced with a straight-set win, and the Aquinas No. 2 doubles team of Patrick Gundersen and Ezra Barna won twice at No. 2 doubles. Onalaska’s No. 3 doubles team of Bradley Baker and Elliot Glebke also advanced with two victories.

Altoona Subsectional

EAU CLAIRE — West Salem is third after scoring 12 points, and Logan follows in fourth with 10 as they head to the Menards Center for sectional competition on Thursday.

West Salem senior Kyle Hehli (22-2) drew a first-round by end plays Logan junior Harrison Pataska (14-10) in a No. 1 singles semifinal, and West Salem senior Jesse Miller (12-11) is a qualifier in the No. 2 singles bracket after winning two matches.

West Salem senior Jack Noelke (20-6) is also a singles qualifier after winning two matches at No. 3.
Logan’s Finnian Clark and Mitchell Jarrett advanced at No. 1 doubles with a victory.
