Thursday track and field report: Panthers win boys side of Sparta Invitational

SPARTA — The West Salem High School track and field program came away with boys championship and girls runner-up team finishes Thursday at the Sparta Las Chance meet.

The Panthers scored 177 points to win the 10-team boys competition and 146 to place second to Westby in the girls competition. Onalaska’s boys were second (123.33), and its girls third (134.5).
West Salem was able to celebrate two individual championships and two relay championships in the boys competition.

Tom Stenberg won the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 8.32 seconds), and Andrew Lorenz was victorious in the 3,200 (10:14.82). The Panthers also won the 800 relay (1:33.93) and 3,200 relay (8:19.16).

Onalaska came away with boys wins from Gabe Mauss in the triple jump (43 feet, 0.25 inches), Brendan Chenault in the long jump (21-3.25), Kaeson Stettler in the 200 (24.78), Carson Fink in the 1,600 (4:55.17).

The Panthers also received second-place finishes from their 400 relay (44.58), 1,600 relay (3:39.25). Michael Torrance (800, 2:08.71), Owen McKinney (1,600, 4:56.51), Carson Gronemus (3,200, 10:24.69), Jack Torrance (high jump, 6-2), Jovey Morrison (pole vault, 9-6) and Isaiah Laack (discus, 142-0) also placed second.

Onalaska’s Cam Cornett (100, 11.67), Joshua Phillips (110 hurdles, 16.52), Aiden Hoff (300 hurdles, 43.53) and Cooper Hegge (long jump, 19-10.75) were also second.

West Salem’s girls had a couple of double winners in Olivia Maki and Madison Kaiser. Maki won the 100 hurdles (16.19) and 300 hurdles (38.59) and Kaiser the shot put (34-10) and discus (100-2).
Mia Olson also won the 1,600 (5:25.14), and the Panthers won the 1,600 relay (4:19.28) and 3,200 relay (10:03.92).

Onalaska picked up two wins from Makena McGarry in the 100 (12.38) and 200 (25.73) and one from Mara Klein (800 (2:27.5).

Maia Hutchens (pole vault, 10-0) and Sam MacRogers (3,200, 12:36.91) were both second for West Salem.

The Hilltoppers received runner-up performances from Eliana Mascotti (200, 27.11), Sadie Peterson (800, 2:28.95), Finley Rudie (100 hurdles, 17.08), Ella Ballmer (long jump, 16-1.5), Ella stevens (triple jump, 34-3.75), Kennedy Busta (shot put, 31-11) and Rickie Tillotson (discus, 95-8).

WHITEHALL — Arcadia’s boys were third with 101 points and were followed by Logan (fourth, 87) and Melrose-Mindoro (seventh, 46.5).

The Mustangs were fifth in the girls competition (62.5), while Logan (sixth, 52.5) and Arcadia (ninth, 28.5) followed.

Melrose-Mindoro’s Bristol Coats had the biggest night for local girls with a victory in the 100 (12.89) and second place in the long jump (16-6). Teammate Sheila Johnson also won the high jump (5-0).

Logan received girls wins from Payton Siekert (200, 28.52) and Lydia Mason (shot put, 31-2), and Arcadia’s Jaylie Dahl won the 400 (59.05).

Arcadia’s boys picked up victories in five events, two of them being the 1,600 relay (3:31.07) and 3,200 relay (8:57.41).

David Escalara (300 hurdles, 42.29), Ted Teske (long jump (21-5.75) and Trey Lyga (discus, 173-9) also won for the Raiders.

Chenue Thao (110 hurdles, 15.59) and Gavin Kreiling (pole vault, 12-0) won for Logan.

Teske added a second place in the high jump (5-10), and teammate Andy Monroy was second in the 1,600 (4:57.92).

Logan’s Sam King (shot put, 44-2.25) and Josh Pogreba (discus, 144-6) were second, and so was the Rangers’ 800 relay (1:35.81).

Melrose-Mindoro’s 400 relay was also a runner-up (46.75).
