Monday boys golf report: Onalaska wins final MVC meet and season championship

VIROQUA — The Onalaska High School boys golf team put four of its players among the top eight to shoot the low score and emerge with an MVC championship Monday at Viroqua Hills Golf Course.

The Hilltoppers trailed Holmen in the season standings going into the final 18-hole meet and shot a collective 315 to beat the Vikings by 15 strokes and surge ahead of them for the final standings by earning 18 points.

Second-place Holmen earned 15, and that left the Hilltoppers with a 62-61 advantage in the battle for the season title.

Onalaska sophomore Chasen Witt was meet medalist — his first such honor in a conference meet this season — with a 5-over-par 76, and Holmen junior Ayden Dirks shot a 77 to finish second after his best previous conference finish was 15th place. Onalaska freshman Rylan Tomashek was third at 78.

Holmen senior Cale Halaska is the season medalist, and his score of 79 tied for fourth place on Monday. Every conference meet was won by a different golfer.

Tomashek was second in the season standings with 52.5 points, and he was followed by Witt (50.5), Central/Logan sophomore Sid Hooyman (50) and Onalaska senior John Werwinski (47.5).

Aquinas was third in the season team standings at 56, and Central/Logan was fifth with 38.

Witt shot a 43 on the front nine and a 33 with two birdies on the back. He birdied at No. 11 and No. 13 and had one bogey to beat par by one shot on the back nine.

Dirks shot a 42 on the front and 35 on the back with birdies at No. 10 and No. 12, while Tomashek shot 40 on the front and 38 on the back with a birdie at No. 16.

Aquinas freshman James Siegert shot the 79 that forced a fourth-place tie with Halaska.
Teams now prepare for WIAA regional tournaments.

Onalaska, Holmen and Central/Logan play a Division 1 regional at Lake Wisconsin Country Club in Prairie du Sac on May 27, and Aquinas competes in a Division 2 regional at Trempealeau Mountain Golf Course on May 27.
