Tuesday girls soccer report: Kelly helps first-place West Salem top Holmen

WEST SALEM — The West Salem girls soccer team maintained its lead in the MVC with a 2-1 victory over visiting Holmen on the field next to the Panther Den on Tuesday.

The Panthers (9-1-1, 7-0-1) received both goals from senior Brynlee Kelly, who broke a 1-1 tie by scoring directly on a corner kick in the second half. Kelly also scored off a through ball from Emily Graham in the first half before the Vikings (7-6-1, 5-3) tied the game.

West Salem received strong play from center backs Kayla Olson and Anna Flack, who made key tackles once it secured the lead, and goalkeeper Baylee Faucet made the stop on a penalty kick to stop Holmen from tying the game.

Onalaska 5, Tomah 0

TOMAH — The second-place Hilltoppers (9-2-1, 6-1-1), who are ranked ninth in Division 2 by state coaches, shut out the Timberwolves in Tomah.

Freshman Ellie Thesing assisted on Onalaska’s first two goals, and the Hilltoppers received one goal apiece from five players.

Francesca Vriens, Isabella Cromheecke, Finley Walters, McKenna Alderman and Claire Verzwyvelt all scored for the Hilltoppers, Natalie Tevis and Vivian Guzzo added assists.

Avery Cowley gave Onalaska the shutout with five saves.

Aquinas 1, Central 0

LA CROSSE — The Blugolds (7-3-2, 3-3-2) knocked the RiverHawks (9-2-2, 5-2-1), who are ranked eighth in Division 2 by state coaches, out of a second-place tie with a second-half goal.

Hayden Zehren scored for Aquinas, which had 11 shots and put for of them on goal.

Central was held scoreless for the third time and put six of its 14 shots on goal.
