Thursday baseball report: Aquinas wins city battle over Central

LA CROSSE — The Aquinas High School baseball team, which is ranked third in Division 2 by state coaches, ran its winning streak to eight games with a 10-4 MVC victory over Central at Copeland Park on Thursday.

The Blugolds (11-2, 7-1) beat the RiverHawks (2-11, 0-6) for the second time this week by scoring at least once in each of the first five innings and holding Central scoreless until the fourth.

Catcher Jacob Thornton went 4 for 5, outfielder Landon Teachout was 2 for 5, and infielder Isaac Schelfhout drove in two runs for Aquinas, which had 12 hits.

Aedan David and Brayden Young each doubled as the Blugolds received either a hit , RBI or run scored from every spot in the batting order.

The RiverHawks had five hits against three Aquinas pitchers and were led by right fielder Dawson Lapic’s 2-for-3 performance.

Waylon Hargrove struck out nine Central batters over five-plus innings.

Caledonia 8, Fillmore Central 2

CALEDONIA — The Warriors (10-4) allowed two runs in the first but nothing afterward in picking up a win.

First baseman Garrett Konz was 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles for Caledonia, which scored three runs in the second inning and two more in the third to pull away.

Landon O’Heron and Will Allen each drove in two runs, and Allen stole three of his team’s seven bases. O’Heron pitched six-plus innings and struck out seven while allowing two earned runs.

Onalaska 8, Logan 3

LA CROSSE — The third-place Hilltoppers (7-8, 6-2) scored four runs in the top of the fifth to pull away from a 3-3 tie and beat the Rangers (8-7, 3-5).

All five of Onalaska’s his were singles, but second baseman Copper Rudie’s brought home the final two runs of the fifth. Pitcher/left fielder Ian Kowal was also 2 for 3 and drove in two runs for the Hilltoppers.

First baseman Owen Check and shortstop Bradley Check were both 2 for 3 for Logan. Bradley Check and Preston Elstton drove in runs for the Rangers.

Hunter Morse, Carson Campbell and Trent Oyen each drove in a run for Onalaska.

Viroqua 6, West Salem 3

VIROQUA — The Panthers (6-9, 4-6) gave up four runs in the first two innings and couldn’t claw their way back in.

Third baseman Terryn Boland was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and left fielder Mekebo Anderson went 2 for 3 with one RBI to account for West Salem’s runs. The Panthers also made three errors that led to two unearned runs.

Westby 12, Onalaska Luther 2 (5)

WESTBY — The Knights (4-10-1, 1-6) trailed by seven runs after one inning and didn’t score until fourth.

Left fielder Devin Larsen had one of Luther’s four singles and drove in two runs, but the Knights trailed 10-0 before they scored their first runs.

G-E-T 12, Arcadia 2 (5)

GALESVILLE — The Raiders (7-11, 3-7) didn’t score until the top of the fifth and faced an 11-0 deficit before getting that run.

Arcadia managed just two hits, and outfielder/pitcher Max Sobotta and first baseman Login Scow had those. Sobotta also had a stolen base.
