Tuesday softball report: Peterson shuts down Holmen for Central shutout

LA CROSSE — Senior pitcher Carmen Peterson never let the Holmen High School softball team find a comfort zone on Tuesday.

The result for Central was a 2-0 MVC victory over the Vikings at State Road Elementary School.
The RiverHawks (6-10, 3-4) scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Peterson shut Holmen (6-7, 5-4) down on two hits while striking out eight and walking two.

Ellie Gillitzer led off Central’s fourth with a single and stole second base. Third baseman Ashani Yang drew a one-out walk to put runners at the corners before center fielder Elena Wagner grounded out to score Gillitzer.Right fielder Maleah Tomesh then singled to left to score Yang.

Left fielder Kaylee Mosser and shortstop Macy Kline singled for the Vikings. Both tried to steal but were thrown out at second base by Terri Shawley.

Tomah 3, Onalaska 1

TOMAH — The Timberwolves (14-2, 8-0) extended their lead over the second-place Hilltoppers (10-4, 7-2) by beating them for a second time.

Tomah scored all of its runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Onalaska came back with a second-inning run when Kylie Gilhausen scored on a passed ball. Zoe Koonce-O’Kane had Onalaska’s only hit.

Sydney Kraus struck out eight, walked seven and allowed five hits. All three of Tomah’s runs were earned.

West Salem 11, Westby 1 (6)

WEST SALEM — The first-place Panthers (12-4, 8-1) finished the Norsemen with a two-run sixth inning.

Westby managed just three hits — all singles — against West Salem junior Josie Brudos, who struck out 12, walked two and didn’t allow an earned run. Brudos was also 4 for 4 with four singles and three runs scored.

First baseman Makena Ihle drove in three runs and stole a base, and catcher Megan Johnson doubled while going 2 for 3.

Left fielder Brooklyn Lee and center fielder Makinlee Marshall also had two hits apiece for West Salem, which leads both Arcadia (8-2) and G-E-T (7-1) by a half-game in the conference standings.

Melrose-Mindoro 16, Arcadia 9

ARCADIA — The Mustangs (13-2) won their second game in a row and scored at least once in each of the first five innings in a game that included 16 errors.

Second baseman Bella Rozek was 4 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs for Melrose-Mindoro, which had 17 hits and never trailed after scoring four times in the top of the first.

Rozek had a single that helped score a run in the first, a three-run homer in the second and a two-run homer in the seventh. She scored four runs.

Shortstop Cooper Zeman was also 4 for 5 with four runs scored. She doubled twice, drove in one run and stole one base. Third baseman Madeline Frauenkron was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Miranda Banse 2 for 5 with two RBIs.

Pitcher/shortstop Kaitlyn Bremer hit a home run and drove in three for Arcadia (11-6), which was coming off an eight-inning win that gave G-E-T its first Coulee Conference loss. Tatum Drazkowski and Layna Wozney also had two hits apiece for the Raiders.

Logan 12, Black River Falls 7

BLACK RIVER FALLS — Pitcher Sophie Schmitz was 4 for 4 with four singles, two stolen bases and an RBI for the Rangers (4-12) in their second consecutive win.

Logan stretched a three-run lead with three runs in the top of the seventh to capture the victory.
Third baseman Kenna Streeck was 2 for 4 with a team-high four RBIs and two stolen bases.

Catcher Maria Weber tripled, scored four runs and recorded three of Logan’s nine stolen bases.
Second baseman Noah Reineking also drove in two runs and doubled for the Rangers.

Aquinas 11, Sparta 6

SPARTA — The Blugolds (6-8, 3-5) were sparked by Ella Deets, who went 3 for 5 and hit a two-run inside-the-park home run. She also tripled and singled and drove in four runs as Aquinas turned the tables on a previous loss to the Spartans.

Eight batters in the Aquinas lineup had at least one hit.

Kathryn Savoldelli went 2 for 4 with a double, and Abby Ziolkowski tripled or Aquinas, which has won two in a row and four of its past six games.

Dover-Eyota 2, Caledonia 1

CALEDONIA — The Warriors (12-2) had a seven-game win streak snapped when the final out was made with the tying run in scoring position.

The Eagles scored once in the first inning and once in the seventh before Caledonia began its seventh-inning rally.

Third baseman Paizley Lange led off with a single before advancing to second base on a ground ball that was turned into the second out. Center fielder Nora Staggemeyer doubled Lange home before a groundout ended the game.

The Warriors had seven hits, and Lange and Staggemeyer were both 2 for 3.

Freshman Avery Augedahl pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine with two walks, but Dover-Eyota scored with the help of an error in the first.

G-E-T 7, Luther 2

ONALASKA — The Knights (8-9, 3-6) led 1-0 after the first inning and 2-1 after the second, but the second-place Red Hawks (12-3, 7-1) scored three in the top of the third to take control.

Catcher Julia Sill was 2 for 3 with an solo home run and second baseman Amanda Yonkovich 2 for 4. Rylee Weber also drove in a run for Luther.
