Friday baseball report: Holmen still unbeaten in MVC after beating Rangers in five innings

TODD SOMMERFELDT

HOLMEN — The Holmen High School baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to complete a 10-0 MVC victory over visiting Logan on Friday.

The Vikings (10-2-1, 8-0) kept their unbeaten run through the conference alive and used timely hitting throughout the lineup and two-hit pitching from senior Aaron Ploszay to do it.

Six of Holmen’s eight hits were doubles, and first baseman Noah Oswald highlighted the five-run fifth with a three-run double on the first pitch he saw from Logan relief pitcher Tommy Check. Designated hitter Abe Henderson also drove in three runs, and third baseman Jude Anderson doubled twice and scored three times from the top of the batting order.

Ploszay allowed two solid singles to Owen Check and Preston Elston but struck out seven batters while walking just one for the victory.

“I was really pounding the (strike) zone and finding strikes,” Ploszay said. “The defense was also there for me today, and we had no errors, which is always good.

“We had a good all-around game with offense and defense.”

Aquinas 3, Tomah 1

LA CROSSE — The Blugolds (9-2, 5-1) had just three hits but ran their winning streak to six by completing a season sweep of the Timberwolves at Lee Gilbert Field.

Aquinas scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and held Tomah scoreless after a first-inning run.

Shortstop Jonny Deets and left fielder Landon Teachout each had a run-scoring single in the fifth. Deets brought home Brayden Young, and Teachout plated Deets for the final winning margin.

Waylon Hargrove pitched a complete-game five-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk.

Eau Claire Memorial 6, Central 5

EAU CLAIRE — The RiverHawks (2-9) allowed three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to let a win over the Old Abes slip through their fingers.

Center fielder Derrick Pangier doubled and drove in two runs for Central, which held a 5-2 lead going to the bottom of the sixth.
Catcher Jude Alvarado also doubled and added a run-scoring hit for the RiverHawks, who were only able to record one out before Memorial scored its three seventh-inning runs.

West Salem 10, Prairie du Chien 7

WEST SALEM — The Panthers (5-7) scored eight of their runs in the first three innings and finished with 10 hits.

First baseman Will Schmidt and shortstop Drew McConkey were both 2 for 4 for West Salem, which struck out three times and drew seven bases on balls. McConkey also doubled.

Outfielder Jacson Bonsall drove in three runs and Luke Grube two for the Panthers, who scored five runs in the bottom of the third to answer the Blackhawks’ four-run top of the second.

Black River Falls 2, Luther 1

BLACK RIVER FALLS — The Tigers scored once in the first and once in the sixth to beat the Knights (2-8-1, 1-4) despite being outhit 7-3.

Center fielder Ashton Kendall and pitcher/shortstop Jackson Kendall both went 2 for 3 for Luther, which scored its run to tie the game at 1 in the third.

Jackson Kendall pitched the first six innings and struck out eight, walked one, allowed three hits and didn’t allow an earned run.

Lewiston-Altura 7, Caledonia 6 (8)

LEWISTON — The Warriors (6-4) allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings and another in the eighth as the Cardinals prevailed.

Center fielder Ben Stemper, pitcher/left fielder Jack Schmitz, right fielder Landon O’Heron and left fielder/pitcher Will Allen all had two hits for Caledonia, which took a 6-5 lead by scoring twice in the top of the seventh. O’Heron tied the game with an RBI single before Mason King broke it by drawing a walk with the bases loaded.

Schmitz (7) and Allen (5) combined to strike out 12, but they also combined to walk 10 and allow eighth hits that led to all seven Lewiston-Altura runs being earned.
