Thursday baseball report: Aquinas beats Sparta in five innings; Holmen wins fifth straight

SPARTA — The Aquinas High School baseball team pushed its winning streak to four games with a 12-1 five-inning victory over Sparta on Thursday.

The Blugolds (7-2, 3-1) had 14 hits and pulled away immediately by scoring eight runs in the top of the first inning.

Aquinas received at least one hit from every spot in the batting order and was led by second baseman/pitcher Isaac Schelfhout’s 3-for-4 performance. Left fielder Landon Teachout had the Blugolds’ lone extra-base hit with a double, and he drove in three runs.

Center fielder Cullen Sackman was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two of his team’s six stolen bases. Third baseman Jackson Knothe was 2 for 4 and also had two stolen bases.

Aedan David pitched four innings and allowed one earned run on four hits for Aquinas.

Holmen 5, Central 1

LA CROSSE — The first-place Vikings (7-1-1, 6-0) continued their unbeaten conference season by beating the RiverHawks (1-7, 0-4) at Copeland Park.

Holmen scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth to run its winning streak to five games heading into Saturday’s home triangular against Stevens Point and Eau Claire Memorial.

Joe Meeter, Abe Henderson, Tyler Rosenow and Braeden Linse all had two hits for the Vikings, who lead second-place Logan and Aquinas — both 3-1 — in the MVC standings.

Henderson doubled, and Rosenow drove in three runs to back up starting pitcher Aaron Ploszay, who threw five innings and allowed one earned run on four hits and four walks while striking out six.

Derrick Pangier was 2 for 3 and drove in Central’s run for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Aiden Schulze also doubled for the RiverHawks.

Onalaska 9, Tomah 2

TOMAH — The Hilltoppers (5-5, 4-2) scored three times in the top of the first inning and never trailed against the Timberwolves (4-8, 2-4) and end their two-game conference win streak.

Tyler Kowal, Ian Kowal, Antwon Felten and Cooper Rudie all had two hits for Onalaska, which had 11. Tyler Kowal and Ian Kowal each doubled and combined to score five runs.

Hunter Morse and Landon Stewart each drove in two runs for Onalaska.

Bradyn DeLong pitched six-plus innings and finished with six strikeouts and two earned runs allowed on six hits and two walks.

Black River Falls 4, Arcadia 2

ARCADIA — The Raiders gave up four runs in the sixth inning of the first game and never led in the second.

Carter Wegman doubled as one of Arcadia’s four hits in the first game. Login Scow and Caleb Pronschinske each drove in a run.

Scow drove in two runs in the second game, which included two hits and five Arcadia errors.
