Tuesday baseball report: Hilltoppers win in Kowal’s debut; West Salem comes back to beat Central (and Caledonia photos)

ONALASKA — The Onalaska High School baseball team got off to e good start against visiting Aquinas on Tuesday, and the Hilltoppers turned that into a 7-3 MVC victory over the Blugolds at the Onalaska American Legion.

The game was the first for Onalaska coach Craig Kowal, whose team had 11 hits against two pitchers and scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Catcher Hunter Morse was one of four Onalaska batters to record two hits and one of three to drive in two runs. Morse, third baseman Cooper Rudie and shortstop Tyler Kowal went 2 for 3, and first baseman Carson Zinnecker was 2 for 4 for Onalaska, which used Ian Kowal’s pitching to keep the Blugolds to one run until the seventh.

Rudie, Trent Oyen and Bradyn DeLong all doubled for Onalaska, and Oyen and Rudie joined Morse as players with two RBIs.

Ian Kowal pitched six innings and struck out five batters without allowing a walk. He gave up two earned runs on eight hits.

Catcher Jacob Thornton and third baseman Isaac Schelfhout each had two hits for the Blugolds (2-1). Schelfhout also drove in a run. Waylon Hargrove and Brayden Young combined to allow seven earned runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

West Salem 2, Central 1

WEST SALEM — The Panthers (1-2) picked up their first win of the season with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

First baseman Luke Grube scored the winning run from third base while teammate Max Diegmann was retired in a rundown between first and second base in the sixth. Infielder Parker Demorest also drove in Aidan Hillyer in the fifth to tie the score at 1.

Central received six strong innings from starting pitcher Dawson Lapic, who struck out nine, walked one and allowed two earned runs on nine hits.

Lapic had two hits for the RiverHawks (1-1), who threatened in the seventh before Terryn Boland completed the save.

Will Schmidt was 3 for 3 for West Salem.

Mauston 8, Logan 3

MAUSTON — The Rangers (2-1) were held to three hits and allowed five runs in the first three innings of a nonconference loss.

First baseman Jesse Lycke doubled for Logan, which received two runs scored from infielder Jackson Bosch.

Caledonia 9, Rushford-Peterson 4

RUSHFORD — The Warriors (2-2) scored seven runs in the fourth inning to beat the Trojans.
Firdt baseman Garrett Konz was 3 for 4 with a double and drove in two runs, and center fielder Ben Stemper was 3 for 4 with one RBI and two of Caledonia’s eight stolen bases. Landon O’Heron and Reid Klug also stole two bases each for the Warriors.

Klug was 2 for 5 and matched Konz’s two runs driven in as Caledonia’s lineup racked up 14 hits.

Arcadia 7, Fall Creek 6

ARCADIA — The Raiders used a five-run third inning to anchor a nonconference win over the Crickets.

Center fielder Max Sobotta and left fielder Max Blaschko each drove in two runs for Arcadia, which took a 6-4 lead with its five-run third and never trailed again.
