ONALASKA — The Onalaska Luther High School softball team opened its season with a victory when Rylee Weber singled up the middle to score Liz Kuehner from second base to complete a 10-9 nonconference victory over visiting Aquinas on Thursday.
The Knights (1-0) took a 9-7 lead with a six-run fifth inning before the Blugolds tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth. Luther finished with 12 hits, and senior second baseman Amanda Yonkovich went 3 for 4 with three runs driven in and her first career home run — a two-run shot — in the first inning to give Luther a 3-1 lead.
Weber was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, catcher Julia Sill was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and sophomore Kaitlyn Van Loon was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Kuehner was hit by a pitch three times and set a team record for HBPs in a game.
Sophomore Ava Scholze hit a home run to highlight a 3-for-5 performance for Aquinas, which had nine hits. Catcher Ryann Klar tripled and drove in a run, third baseman Lauren Von Ruden drove in two runs, and Addison Walker and Abby Ziolkowski each drove in a run for the Blugolds.
West Salem 5, Central 3
WEST SALEM — Junior Josie Brudos struck out 12, walked three and allowed four hits an no earned runs for the Panthers (1-0), who scored four times in the first three innings and took a four-run lead to the seventh.
Senior catcher Megan Johnson drove in two runs for West Salem, which received two hits from second baseman Maclaine Heilman, a triple from Brudos and an RBI each from Dylynn Bayer, Madison Elsen.
Sophomore shortstop Ellie Gillitzer hit a home run, a double and went 3 for 4 for the RiverHawks (0-1). Carmen Peterson also scored a run for Central.
Altoona 14, Logan 3 (5)
LA CROSSE — Second baseman Norah Keller was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles, a run scored and an RBI for the Rangers (0-1), who fell behind after allowing eight runs in the first three innings.
Catcher Maria Weber tripled, and shortstop Emma Bacon and first baseman Kaia DePaolo each drove in a run for Logan. Bacon and Weber also scored once each.
