Saturday hockey/wrestling report: Avalanche top Tomah/Sparta in tournament matchup

LAKE DELTON — The Aquinas/Holmen co-op boys hockey team used a pair of goals int he first period to build a lead that it maintained for a 3-2 victory over Tomah/Sparta in the Reedsburg Tournament at Lake Delton Ice Arena on Saturday.

The Avalanche (5-5) picked up their second win in three games at the holiday tournament and received two goals from junior Jack Barth and another from sophomore Mikah Vail to pick up the victory.

Barth scored both of his goals in the first period, and teammate Brody Slusser assisted on both. Jax Hendrickson also assisted on the first, which tied the score at 1, while Ayden Dirks helped set up the second, which was just 2 minutes, 32 seconds after the first.

Vail scored his goal in the second with an assist from James Siegert for a 3-1 lead.

Ben Carney and Parker Holloway scored for Tomah/Sparta (7-3-1), which lost its second straight game. Sterling Intihar and Andrew Carney helped Ben Carney get the first goal, and Holloway scored unassisted in the third.

Mason Kelm had 27 saves for the Avalanche, and Hayden Peterson stopped 20 shots for Tomah/Sparta.

Onalaska/La Crosse 3, Reedsburg/Mauston 0

BARABOO — The Hilltoppers (5-6) scored twice in the first period, and Joshua Pogreba stopped all 27 shots fired at him in a game at Poppy Waterman Ice Arena.

Sophomore Grayson Andel scored two goals and senior Parker Lycke one for Onalaska/La Crosse, which lost its first two games in the tournament.

Lycke opened the scoring on a power play and assists from Jackson Tillman and Matt Tillman at 7:15 in the first. Andel then scored with an assist from Jackson Tillman at even strength eight minutes later.

Andel provided the final goal in the third, and that came with assists from Matt Tillman and Lycke.

Waupaca Tournament

Black River Falls co-op 11, Wausau East/Merrill 7

WAUPACA — The Tigers (6-3) scored five times in the first period and five more times in the second to build a lead at the Waupaca Expo Center.

Drew Apicella scored four goals and Calvin Lakowske three to go with five assists for Black River Falls. Ryan Magnuson scored twice, and Briar Peterson, Maddux Alvarez, Henry Meek, Aidan Gunderson, Zachary Magnus and Magnuson had one assist each in the Tigers’ third straight victory.

Black River Falls has scored 25 goals in its past two games.

Rochester Hockey Festival

Fargo South/Shanley (N/D.) 10, La Crescent-Hokah 1

ROCHESTER — Stepan Vent scored with an assist from Cooper Hill on a third-period power play for the Lancers (3-6) at Graham Arena.

WRESTLING

NORTHERN BADGER

RIVER FALLS — Aralyn White Eagle (7-5) won two of three matches and brought home second place at 145 pounds in the girls competition to lead local individuals.

Teammate Ave Gilberg (5-1) was third at 152, while Charlie Heath (7-7) was fourth at 152 and Annaliese Rave (6-7) fifth at 138.

Arcadia’s Kalyce Sobotta (11-2) was third at 132 with three pins and a technical fall, while teammate Amarissa Fernando Pascual (2-4) was fifth at 100.

Blair-Taylor’s MaryJane Flynn (7-6) was third at 165.
