Saturday high school report: Onalaska opens boys basketball season with win

DEFOREST — The Onalaska High School boys basketball team started its season with a 69-58 nonconference victory at DeForest on Saturday.

The Hilltoppers (1-0) were led by senior Broden Steiner and junior Ian Kowal, who scored 21 points apiece against the Norskies.

Freshman Tyler Kowal added 10 for Onalaska, which plays next at Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday.

Cannon Falls 78, La Crescent-Hokah 58

CANNON FALLS — The Lancers (0-1) lost their first game of a new season under returning coach Erik Wuensch.

Senior Berkley Mlsna scored a team-high 14 points, and junior Julian Olson added 12.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Eau Claire Memorial 51, West Salem 34

EAU CLAIRE — The Panthers (3-1) lost for the first time this season after scoring just 15 points in the first half.

The Old Abes turned that into an 11-point halftime lead that was extended in the second half.

Junior Josie Brudos made three 3-pointers and scored a team-high 18 points for West Salem, which had just five field goals in the first half. Senior Megan Johnson was held to eight points.
