Saturday boys hockey: Avalanche come up short at Madison Memorial

MADISON — The Avalanche boys hockey team surrendered the first two goals of the game and played from behind the rest of the way in a 5-3 nonconference loss to Madison Memorial at the Madison Ice Arena on Saturday.

The co-op, made up of players from Holmen, Aquinas, Onalaska Luther, G-E-T and C-FC, used two goals in the second period to get within 4-3 but didn’t score again in the defeat, which was its third in the past four games.

Senior Ayden Dirks scored twice and senior Jaxson Reilley once for the Avalanche (2-3), who were outshot 44-24 and failed to convert on either of their two power plays.

Dirks scored with an assist from senior Cole Van Lin in the first period and with an assist from junior Mikah Vail in the second. Reilley’s goal came with assists from Van Lin and freshman Jack Eckelberg.

The Holmen/Aquinas co-op plays unbeaten Onalaska/La Crosse (3-0) Tuesday night at the OmniCenter.
