Saturday basketball: Holmen boys knock off Caledonia after strong first half

HOLMEN — The Holmen High School boys basketball team bounced back from a loss in its MVC opener on Thursday with a significant nonconference victory over visiting Caledonia on Saturday.

The Vikings (2-2) caught fire early and turned a 23-point scoring advantage in the first half into a 93-80 victory over the Warriors (3-1) at the Bernie L. Ferry Fieldhouse.

Senior Alex Berget broke free for 30 points on 9-for-17 shooting and hit 10 of 12 free throws to lead a Holmen team that shot 55 percent from the floor and made 11 of 22 attempts from the 3-point line. Berget also had six of his team’s 12 steals.

Seven Vikings made at least one 3-pointer, and sophomore Cohen Kendhammer made three on his way to 11 points and a share of the team lead with six rebounds.

Junior Jax Meyer scored 15 points, junior Jayden Bartels 13 and junior Brody Wilber 11 for Holmen.

Caledonia had four players in double figures led by junior Jacoby Hammell’s 18 points. Sophomore Grant King added 17, senior Aaron Stemper 16 and sophomore Colin Stemper 11. The Stempers combined for five 3-pointers.

Onalaska 86, Medford 46

MEDFORD — The Hilltoppers (3-0), who are fourth in Division 2 of the Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll this week, blew out the Raiders (1-3).

Onalaska had five players reach double figures and was led by a 19-point performance by sophomore Gavin McRoberts.

Senior Ian Kowal, senior Rowan McGrath, sophomore Tyler Kowal and sophomore Gabe Whited added 10 points apiece for the Hilltoppers, who host DeForest (4-0) on Tuesday.

Caledonia 77, La Crescent-Hokah 27

CALEDONIA — The Warriors (5-1, 4-0 Three River-East) won their fifth game in a row and had a 45-point lead by the end of the first half.

Caledonia held the Lancers (1-4, 0-4) scored just seven points in the first half and couldn’t keep up with outside shooting that produced 11 Caledonia 3-pointers.

Twelve Warriors scored, and senior Aubrie Klug erupted for 28 points and made five of her team’s 3s. Klug scored 28 points for the second straight game and has made 13 3-pointers and scored 90 points over her past three games.

Ashlyn Reinhart added nine points for Caledonia, which also received eight from Kensey King and seven from Nicole Banse.
