Tuesday boys basketball: Sixth-ranked Blugolds roll past Neillsville in season opener

NEILLSVILLE — The Aquinas High School boys basketball team stretched a 15-point halftime lead into a 77-53 nonconference road victory over Neillsville to open its season on Tuesday.

The Blugolds (1-0), who are ranked sixth in Division 3 by the Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports media poll, were led by junior Calvin Bahr’s 26 points and senior Finley Strom’s 14 points and pushed their winning streak against nonconference teams to 17 games.

Bahr scored 14 points in the first half and 12 in the second while Strom made three 3-pointers and scored 11 of his after halftime.

Senior Logan Becker and sophomore Will Dickinson each made two 3-pointers. Becker finished with 10 points and Dickinson with nine.

Onalaska 83, Wisconsin Rapids 35

ONALASKA — Senior Ian Kowal scored 17 of his 26 points in the first half as the Hilltoppers (1-0) rolled over the visiting Red Raiders.

Menomonie 63, Central 44

MENOMONIE — The RiverHawks (0-1) opened their season with a loss and trailed by as many as 25 points in the second half.

Senior Joey Pretasky scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for Central. He also made 2 of 3 attempts from the 3-point line.

Junior Anthony Jones added 13 points for the RiverHawks, who made just 28.6 percent (18 of 63) of their shots from the floor and went 3-for-21 from the 3-point line as a team.

Eau Claire North 85, Logan 51

EAU CLAIRE — The Rangers started their season with a loss to the Huskies.

Junior Ryan Thurman scored a team-high 16 points, and junior Harper Kendle added 12 for Logan.
