LA CROSSE — The backfield duo of senior Maxim Roberts and sophomore Tommy Check wreaked havoc at Swanson Field on Friday, and it earned the Logan High School football team another game.
Roberts rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns, and Check added 179 yards and scored four times as the fourth-seeded Rangers (7-3) knocked off fifth-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran 42-19 in a WIAA Division 3 first-round playoff game.
Check scored on a 39-yard run and Roberts on a 1-yarder in the first quarter, and Roberts added two conversion runs for a 16-7 lead. Check’s TD run was on the second snap of Logan’s first possession and after the Rangers stopped the Vikings on fourth down.
Check added a 10-yarder, and Roberts scored from 56 yards out in the second quarter before Check reached the end zone from 15 and 25 yards away in the third quarter for a 42-13 lead.
The Rangers rushed for 428 yards and had 517 total yards to stop the Vikings’ four-game winning streak and end their season with a 6-4 record.
Check also completed 4 of 7 passes for 89 yards and Bubba Leaver caught two of them for a team-high 35 yards.
Preston Elston also had an interception for the Logan defense.
The Rangers will play at top-seeded Waukesha Catholic Memorial (9-1) for a second-round game on Oct. 31.
