MADISON — Onalaska Luther High School senior Emma Kolb, classmates Kenzie Olson and Keira Paus and West Salem senior Kendall Sullivan all advanced to the second day of the WIAA state girls tennis tournament with wins at the Nielsen Tennis Center on Thursday.
Kolb and Sullivan won Division 2 singles matches, and Olson and Paus teamed up to win a doubles match.
Aquinas senior Tenzin Nelson (29-3) won her first singles match in the Division 1 bracket before falling in the second round.
Nelson, seeded 16th, opened with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Superior’s Lily Clark (23-3) on Thursday morning. Green Bay Notre Dame’s Anna Miller (22-3) then handed Nelson a 6-1, 7-5 defeat in the second round to advance to Friday morning’s third round.
Kolb (29-4) and all Division 2 qualifiers played just once on Thursday. She advanced to the second round with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Waukesha Catholic Memorial’s Grace Schreiber (18-10). Kolb will play second-seeded Sasha Quandt (15-0) of Oshkosh Lourdes Academy at noon on Friday.
Sullivan (27-2) opened with a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) win over Madison Edgewood’s Abigail Barker (13-9) in the first round. She meets seventh-seeded Therese Kern (18-2) of Eau Claire Regis at 11 a.m. Friday in her second-round match.
Olson and Paus (26-7) needed a tiebreak but managed to slip past Stevens Point Pacelli’s Vivian Bers and Maddy Pionek 6-7 (6), 6-3, 10-6 after losing the first set. Olson and Paus will play seventh-seeded Charlotte Bullard and Melanie Pellegrino (13-11) in the second round at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
