WIAA state girls golf: Onalaska eighth as a team while Schams places 30th

MADISON — The Onalaska High School girls golf team completed an eighth-place finish in Division at the WIAA state tournament on Tuesday.

The Hilltoppers, who were eighth after Monday’s first round, maintained that spot by following up a first-day score of 364 with a 365 for a 36-hole total of 729.

Onalaska finished five shots ahead of ninth-place Hortonville and eight in front of 10th-place Franklin. Waukesha North/South/West was sixth at 680, and Milwaukee DSHA won with a score of 621.

Spooner edged out second-place Edgerton by two strokes with a 694 to win the Division 2 championship.
Sophomore Finley Schams finished 30th individually with a two-round score of 168 on the par-72 University Ridge course. Brookfield East senior Payton Haugen won the individual title by shooting a 12-under-par 132 with a first round of 67 and second of 65.

Schams shot an 86 on Monday and came back with an 82 on Tuesday. Her second round consisted of an 8-over 44 on the front nine and a 2-over 38 on the back nine. She finished the font with five straight pars and finished the back with six pars in a row.

Junior Becka Mohr followed with a 178 that was good for a tie for 47th place. Mohr shot a 90 on Monday and cut that to an 88 on Tuesday and shot a 7-over 43 on the back nine. That performance included a birdie at No. 15.

Senior Sydney Kranig finished 62nd with a 190 and senior Rickie Tillotson in a tie for 64th with a 193. Kranig had rounds of 95 and 95, and Tillotson shot a 94 on Monday and a 99 on Tuesday to give the Hilltoppers their final two team scores. Onalaska’s eighth-place finish is its best since placing seventh in 2017.

Tomah senior Karma Hasselberger, who was MVC medalist this season, tied for 20th individually with rounds of 79 and 82 for a 161.

Westby/Viroqua senior Maddi Fletcher, who was season medalist in the Coulee Conference, was part of a three-way tie for second place in the final Division 2 standings. Fletcher shot rounds of 78 and 75 for a score of 153, which was only beaten by Colfax/Elk Mound’s Belle Kongshaug’s 148 and tied by two others.
