Thursday cross country report: Aquinas girls third, Azene 10th at Durand-Arkansaw

DURAND — The Aquinas High School girls cross country team placed third and was led by sophomore Sanjana Musafir at the Durand-Arkansaw Invitational on Thursday.

Musafir finished fifth overall with a time of 20 minutes, 42.1 seconds to help the Blugolds to a team score of 79 that was only beaten by Boyceville (66) and Somerset (70) in a nine-team competition at Rolling Greens Golf Course.

Aquinas also had junior Emily Bagniefski in the top 10 with her ninth-place finish and time of 21:09.5 and senior Alexa Myre in the top 20 with a 19th-place run and time of 22:26.4.

Senior Madelynn Grossbach (22nd, 22:37.2) and junior Ava Fernholz (24th, 22:57.1) were also scoring runners for the Blugolds.

Melrose-Mindoro junior Sheila Johnson finished 19th at 22:20.8, but the Mustangs didn’t have enough runners to score as a team. Melrose-Mindoro had four runners, and senior Calysta Bautch was second among them in 55th (25:31.4).

The Mustangs were 10th out of 14 teams in the boys competition.

Junior Caleb Arneson ran the Mustangs’ fastest time with a 19:45.9, and he was followed by freshman Carter Wortman (20:34.5), who was 38th and helped the Mustangs to a team score of 245.

Juniors Dayten Wade was 57th (21:35.8), Ryker Werner 61st (22:09.2) and Icean Hangartner 66th (22:42.8).

Aquinas ran an incomplete boys team and was led by senior Kaleb Azene’s 10th-place time of 18:16.9. Freshman Nolan Vandenlangenberg was also 19th at 19:34.2 for the Blugolds.
