Saturday volleyball report: Holmen wins Gold Bracket at 24-team Kettle Moraine Invitational

KETTLE MORAINE — The eighth-ranked Holmen High School volleyball team reeled off its second significant tournament championship of the season by sweeping through the competition and winning a bracket at the 24-team Kettle Moraine Invitational on Saturday.

The Vikings beat all six of their opponents in straight sets and handed DeForest a 25-18, 25-22 defeat to win the Gold bracket. The Norskies had knocked off Oak Creek, which received Division 1 votes in last week’s WVCA coaches rankings, in the semifinals.

Holmen (18-0), which also won the Beast of the Northeast Tournament in Grand Chute earlier this season, also beat Sun Prairie West 24-21, Sturgeon Bay 25-12, 25-10, Eau Claire Memorial 25-18, 25-12, Port Washington 25-21, 25-18 and Cedarburg 26-24, 25-21.

Port Washington received Division 2 votes in last week’s state rankings.

Senior Charley Casey had a team-high eight kills against DeForest, and senior Hadley Teff added five. Senior Macy Kline had 15 digs and surpassed the 1,500 mark for her career. Casey also topped the 500 career mark in digs.

Silver Bracket

Onalaska was knocked out of the Silver bracket with a 9-25, 25-23, 17-15 loss to Barneveld in the semifinals.

The Hilltoppers (9-7) also lost to Marshfield 25-18, 25-21 and beat Madison West 25-16, 25-13 and Marshall 25-21, 25-23 and placed 11th overall in the 24-team field.

Junior Natalie Marso had 37 kills to lead Onalaska, while senior Makena McGarry added 31. Freshman Bella Eckstein had 72 assists, junior Kendall Carter 13 blocks and sophomore McKenzie Bauer 44 digs.

Bauer recorded the 500th dig of her career.
