REEDSBURG — The Central High School football team became the first team to signal for possible chaos at the top of the MVC again this season with a 35-28 victory over Reedsburg on Friday.

The conference ended in a five-way tie last fall, and the Beavers (2-1, 0-1) were the team most pointed to when asked for a favorite.

The RiverHawks (1-2, 1-0) made sure Reedsburg — ranked eighth in the Medium Division of the ESPN Wisconsin Media Poll — has to win at Onalaska next week to get back to even when senior Christian Rudrud completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to senior Connor Groth with 8 minutes, 18 seconds left. That broke a 28-28 tie, and Central held on the rest of the way for its first win of the season.

Rudrud, who carried 26 times for a team-high 96 yards, had tied the game just 3 minutes earlier on an 8-yard touchdown run.

Junior Gabe Servais passed for a toouchdown and rushed for a touchdown, and Groth finished with six catches for 86 yards.
The RiverHawks rushed for 191 yards and passed for 182 and didn’t allow a completed pass to put two straight losses behind them.

Logan 43, Sparta 21

LA CROSSE — The Rangers (3-0, 1-0) scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to erase a one-point lead for the Spartans (2-1, 0-1).

Senior Maxim Roberts ran for touchdowns of 12, 1 and 14 yards in the fourth for Logan, which had 26 first downs and rushed for 391 yards.

Roberts finished with a team-high 216 on 24 carries, and sophomore quarterback Tommy Check matched his three touchdowns and gained 175 yards on 22 attempts.

Check scored on a 27-yard run in the first quarter, a 1-yarder in the second quarter and a 2-yarder in the third. He also followed two of the Roberts scores with conversion runs.

Check also completed all four of his passes for 87 yards, and Andrew Stanton caught two of those balls for a team-high 46 yards.

Sparta was held to 176 total yards and 101 of those came on seven completions by quarterback Everett Laufenberg.

West Salem 49, Viroqua 6

WEST SALEM — The Panthers (2-1, 1-0) opened their Coulee Conference schedule with a dominant win over the Blackhawks.

West Salem rushed for 279 yards and received two-touchdown performances from juniors Rory O’Neill and Lucas Fry and another from sophomore Kaden Langrehr.

Langrehr led the way with 89 rushing yards despite carrying just twice, and Fry added 48 on six attempts. West Salem sophomore Jackson Seberg also rushed for a touchdown.

Junior quarterback Drew McConkey gained 20 yards on two carries and completed 4 of 5 passes for 59 yards.
