ONALASKA — The Central High School baseball team completed its MVC season by splitting a doubleheader with Onalaska on Tuesday.
The RiverHawks (4-19, 2-10) bounced back from a 2-0 loss in the first game to win the second one 7-5 at the Onalaska Legion field.
Central scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take control of the second game and get the split against the MVC’s third-place Hilltoppers (10-12, 7-5), whose win in the opener was its third in four games.
The RiverHawks scored their sixth-inning runs on a Landon Smith fielder’s choice, two-run single by center fielder Derrick Pangier and sacrifice fly off the bat of first baseman Erik Ramseier to turn a two-run deficit into a two-run lead. Pangier was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases and Smith 2 for 5 with one RBI.
Shortstop/pitcher Aiden Schulze was 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, and right fielder Dawson Lapic drove in two runs for Central.
Junior third baseman/pitcher Ian Kowal was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Onalaska, which had four hits against two Central pitchers in the loss.
Carson Campbell and Jaffer Banasik combined on a one-hit shutout in the first game for the Hilltoppers, who scored both of their runs in the top of the fourth inning. Campbell struck out six, walked five and allowed a single over five innings, and Banasik struck out three without a walk over two hitless innings.
Catcher Hunter Morse doubled, and shortstop Tyler Kowal had an RBI for Onalaska in the victory. Lapic and Ramseier combined on a three-hitter for the RiverHawks.
Aquinas 10, Arcadia 1
ARCADIA — The Blugolds (19-3), ranked fourth in Division 2 by state coaches, ran their winning streak to five games and scored all of their runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings against the Raiders (10-15).
Senior catcher Jacob Thornton was 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, a stolen base and three RBIs for Aquinas, which had 11 hits and used four pitchers to limit Arcadia to four hits.
Left fielder Ryan Johnson was 2 for 4 with a double and three runs scored, and first baseman/pitcher Landon Teachout went 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI. Isaac Schelfhout added two RBIs for the Blugolds.
Ben Lightfoot doubled for the Raider, who scored their run when his hit scored Deklyn Grzadzielewski to cut their deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the third.
Waylon Hargrove, Teachout, Jonny Deets and Schelfhout combined on eight strikeouts for Aquinas.
