Thursday boys golf report: West Salem nails down second place in the Coulee

VIROQUA — The West Salem High School boys golf team wrapped up a second-place finish by beating everyone but champion Black River Falls during the Coulee Conference championship round at Viroqua Hills Golf Course on Thursday.

The Panthers placed second in the 18-hole competition and for the season by shooting a collective 342 behind senior medalist Kyle Hehli. That gave West Salem a season score of 85 points, which edged third-place Onalaska Luther (82) and was topped by the Tigers (96).

The Knights completed their third-place season finish with a fourth-place round of 351 on Thursday. Arcadia was fifth on Thursday (359) and sixth for the season with 41 points.

Hehli shot a 10-over-par 81 to beat the rest of the field at Viroqua Hills. He shot a 43 on the front nine and a 38 on the back with a birdie at No. 11. He finished second in the battle for season medalist with 117.5 points. Westby/Viroqua’s Brooks Hoffland was first with 143.5.

West Salem also received scoring rounds from junior Landon Michlig (86), junior Coen Knutson (87) and senior Gavin Loging (88) on Thursday. Sophomore Noah Wachter placed 11th in the individual season standings, and Loging was 13th.

Luther was led on Thursday by seniors Ian Bass and Synclair Byus, who were part of a seventh-place tie with Michlig at 86. Senior Will Huelskamp added an 88 and freshman Robert Bruns and senior Logan Sherry 91s.

Bruns was fifth in the season standings, while Bass was seventh and Byus eighth.

Arcadia was led on Thursday by freshman Landon Jaszewski and his fifth-place round of 85. He also birdied No. 11 while shooting a 2-over 39 on the back nine and wound up fourth in the season standings.

Sophomore Tharren Schock (91), senior Stryder Miller (93) and freshman Owen Anderson (93) also shot scoring rounds for the Raiders on Thursday.
