HOLMEN — The West Salem High School softball team closed out the regular season on a 10-game winning streak with an 8-0 nonconference win over Holmen at Viking Elementary on Thursday.
Junior Josie Brudos struck out nine, walked one and limited the Vikings (7-13) to five hits — all singles — in a complete game.
Junior shortstop Madison Elsen was 2 for 3 and drove in four runs with a home run and a sacrifice fly for the Panthers (17-4). Her home run was a solo shot in the fifth inning, and she added a sacrifice fly in the first and a groundout that scored a run in the sixth.
Second baseman MacLaine Heilman was 3 for 4 with a double and a stolen base to go with two runs scored, and Brudos was 2 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Left fielder Brooklyn Lee also had two hits for West Salem, which hosts Platteville in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal on May 27.
Melrose-Mindoro 4, Eleva-Strum 2
STRUM — The Mustangs (18-3, 13-2) won the championship of Dairyland Conference’s Large Division by breaking a first-place tie with the Cardinals (13-6, 12-3).
Melrose-Mindoro completed a regular-season sweep of Eleva-Strum on the strength of a two-run top of the fourth inning and strong pitching from Emma Severson, who allowed seven hits, struck out three and walked one.
The Mustangs tripled three times and took a 4-1 lead right fielder Miranda Banse tripled home Madeline Frauenkron, then scored on a Kelsey Young single. The Cardinals answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the game was scoreless the rest of the way.
Second baseman Bella Rozek was 2 for 4 and Frauenkron 2 for 3 for Melrose-Mindoro, which also received an RBI each from Rozek and first baseman Opal Buchanan. Buchanan and Frauenkron hit the team’s other triples, and Rozek doubled.
The Mustangs are a top seed for their Division 4 regional and host eighth-seeded Whitehall on May 27.
Onalaska 10, Onalaska Luther 0 (5)
ONALASKA — Freshman Sydney Kraus pitched a no-hitter and went 3 for 4 with two doubles and seven RBIs as the Hilltoppers (17-5) won their fifth game in a row.
Kraus struck out 13 batters and walked one and finished the game with a three-run double to left field that scored Qita Olson, MJ Heit and Zoey Lichty in the fifth. She also hit a two-run double in the third and a two-run single in the fourth.
Olson, Heit and catcher Lauren Pica all had two hits for Onalaska, which didn’t score until the first Kraus double in the third. Olson and Pica also drove in a run apiece.
Tomah 4, Central 3 (9)
LA CROSSE — The RiverHawks (10-13, 6-6) pushed the Timberwolves (21-4, 12-0) before they were allowed to complete their unbeaten MVC season.
Central led 2-0 until the sixth inning, and Tomah tied the score with one run in the sixth and one in the seventh. Both teams scored in the eighth before Brielle Plueger scored on a sacrifice bunt by Libby Mathison in the ninth.
Catcher Terri Shawley led off the Central ninth with a single, but Anna Wall got a groundout and two strikeouts to finish off the win.
Shortstop Ellie Gillitzer gave the RiverHawks their 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Her homer also brought Carmen Peterson around to score after a leadoff single to left field.
Arcadia 8, Aquinas 5
ARCADIA — The Raiders (16-9) scored seven runs in the fourth inning to take care of the Blugolds (10-12).
First baseman Chloe Schlosstein had an RBI double, and Tatum Drazkowski, Kiley Fitzpatrick and Sacia Boland all had RBI singles in the big inning for Arcadia.
Drazkowski, Tessah Ely and Boland were all 2 for 4, and Madison Grotjahn doubled for Arcadia, which has won three of its past five.
Senior catcher Kathryn Savoldelli was 3 for 4 for Aquinas, which had eight players with at least one hit. Ella Deets was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Tessa Miskowski 2 for 4 with two doubles.
Ava Scholze added a two-run homer for the Blugolds.
