BLACK RIVER FALLS — The West Salem High School track and field program swept boys and girls team championships at the Coulee Conference meet on Saturday.
The Panthers finished with 179 points on the boys side — G-E-T was second with 123 — and 177 on the girls side — Westby was second with 172.5 — on a windy day for running, jumping and throwing.
Arcadia’s boys were third (106), and Luther’s fourth (91). Luther’s girls were fourth (98) and Arcadia’s sixth (40).
The boys team won by sweeping all four relays and adding victories in four individual events.
Senior Carter Quackenbush won the 1,600-meter run (4 minutes, 36.72 seconds) and 3,200 (9:55.44), while senior Brennon Anderson won the 800 (2:02.24) and senior Luke Baginski the triple jump (43-3.75).
Anderson also ran with Michael Torrance, Gideon Wolbrink and Drew Anderson to win the 1,600 relay (3:33.61). Torrance doubled up on wins by running with Jovey Morrison, Andrew Larson and Andrew Lorenz on the victorious 3,200 relay (8:36.73), and Wolbrink doubled up by running with Kaden Langrehr, Jayden Hansen and Jackson Williams to win the 800 relay (1:34.67).
Langrehr, Hansen and Williams were joined in victory by Jackson Seberg in the 400 relay (44.5).
Philip Gabrielson was second in the 800 (2:05.4),Tom Stenberg second in the 1,600 (4:43.75) and Lorenz second in the 3,200 (10:15.86).
Williams added a third-place performance in the 200 (23.28), and teammates Carson Gronemus and Elliot Wolf were third in the 1,600 (4:44.91) and shot put (51-5), respectively.
Luther senior Jack Schmeling also had a big day with victories in the 300 hurdles (43.15) and high jump (6-2) and second-place finishes in the shot put (51-6) and discus (147-6). Arcadia senior Ted Teske was second in the 200 (22.9), 400 (52.18), high jump (6-0) and long jump (20-9.5).
Arcadia senior Trey Lyga added a win in the discus (156-11).
Luther’s Nathan Dobberstein was third in the 6.33) and high jump (5-10) and ran one leg for the Knights’ second-place 800 relay (1:35.31). Ayden Livingston, Caden McCollough and Aiden Wickus also ran on that team.
Arcadia’s David Escalara was second in the 300 hurdles (42.22) and ran with the Raiders’ third-place 1,600 relay (3:44.63) that also included Ben Kolstad, Jerson Sanchez and Jorge Guardado.
Luther’s Nathan Jordahl was second in the pole vault (12-0) and Kolstad third (11-6).
Arcadia also received third-place points form Alec Conrad, Matthew Badillo, Camren Schultz and Yahir Gonzalez in the 3,200 relay (9:12.46).
GIRLS
West Salem’s girls won three relays and two individual events. Junior Madison Kaiser led the way with victories in the shot put (35-5.75) and discus (103-10).
Olivia Maki, who placed second in the 100 hurdles (16.13) and 300 hurdles (48.59), ran with Tiegen Duffy, Brielle Moore and Maia Hutchens to win the 800 relay (1:50.39). Moore also ran with Makenna Hirsch, Bailey Rosenthal and Hutchens on the second-place 400 relay (53.94) and placed third in the triple jump (32-11.5).
Kennedy Garbers and Isabel Krueger ran with West Salem’s winning 1,600 and 3,200 relays. They were joined by Faith Minard and Anna Witte on the 1,600 (4:20.09) and by Anna Knudson and Elise Schwarz on the 3,200 (10:47.05).
Mia Olson was runner-up in the 1,600 (5:26.26) and 3,200 (11:58.64), Minard was second in the 800 (2:32.33), and Hutchens was third in the pole vault (8-6).
Sydney Quick was second in the discus (98-4), Witte was third in the 800 (2:34.82), and Elise Flock was third in the 1,600 (5:50.07).
Junior Jaylie Dahl won the 100 (12.51), 200 (26.14) and 400 (1:00.92) for Arcadia, which had no second- or third-place finishers.
Luther’s girls had five second-place finishes and a pair of third-place performances.
Lauren Wickus was second in the high jump (5-3) and long jump (17-5.75), and Jacee Erickson was second in the pole vault (9-6) and shot put (32-7). Erickson also ran with Jayda Livingston, Isabel Mueller and Payton Holub to place second in the 800 relay (1:50.94).
Livington added third-place runs in the 100 hurdles (16.8) and 300 hurdles (50.29).
