HOLMEN — The Holmen High School baseball team kept its grip on first place in the MVC by scoring four late runs in a 4-2 victory over visiting Onalaska on Monday.
The Vikings (13-5-1, 9-0) remained unbeaten in the conference by scoring the last four runs of the game. They also maintained a one-game lead on second-place Aquinas (14-2, 8-1).
Holmen tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and won it with two more in the sixth after third-place Onalaska (7-9, 6-3) had scored twice in the top of the second.
The Vikings broke the tie when catcher Braeden Linse singled home Abe Henderson after Henderson drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a Tyler Rosenow single. A Brennon Metzler grounder later brought Rosenow home for the final winning margin.
Rosenow also made a catch for the first out in the top of the seventh and doubled a runner off at first base.
Metzler was 2 for 3 with the RBI, and pitcher Bradyn DeLong was 2 for 4 with an RBI for Onalaska.
Senior Aaron Ploszay pitched six innings and struck out 10 while allowing one earned run on three walks and four hits. DeLong pitched a complete game for the Hilltoppers and allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six.
Aquinas 6, Logan 0
LA CROSSE — The visiting Blugolds (13-2, 8-1) won their 11th game in a row behind three-hit pitching from Isaac Schelfhout, who struck out three and walked four.
Sophomore shortstop Jonny Deets was 2 for 4 with a solo home run, two runs scored and a stolen base. Junior first baseman Waylon Hargrove was 2 for 3 with a triple and RBI for Aquinas, which scored twice in the third inning and twice in the seventh.
Bradley Check, Parker Lycke and Owen Check each singled for Logan (10-8, 3-6).
West Salem 7, G-E-T 6
WEST SALEM — The Panthers (7-9, 5-6) scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to beat the Red Hawks (10-8, 6-3).
Second baseman Parker Demorest and third baseman drew walks in the fifth before pitcher/first baseman Will Schmidt cracked a two-run double to right field that put West Salem back in the lead.
Schmidt ended up 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Boland and designated hitter Luke Baginski had two hits each for the Panthers.
Baginski also doubled and drove in a run. Schmidt pitched four innings and Jackson Bonsall three for West Salem, and Schmidt struck out five.
Central 6, Sparta 1
LA CROSSE — The RiverHawks (3-13, 1-6) picked up their first conference win by scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning and never relinquishing control at Copeland Park.
Left fielder Landon Smith was 3 for 4 and scored three runs, while catcher Jude Alvarado was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
Designated hitter Erik Ramseier and Dawson Lapic also drove in a run each for Central, which received four-hit pitching from Alvarado and Aiden Schulze. Schulze struck out three over four innings, and Alvarado struck out three and surrendered one hit over three innings.
Caledonia 9, Lewiston-Altura 1
CALEDONIA — The Warriors (11-5) won for the fifth time in six games and sored four runs in the bottom of the firt inning.
First baseman Garrett Konz was 2 for 3 and drove in two runs, and second baseman Tanner Ginther drove in two more runs for Caledonia, which took an 8-0 lead with three more runs in the fourth.
Jack Schmitz doubled, and Reid Klug struck out four while pitching a complete game. Klug walked one and allowed five hits.
Arcadia 11, Osseo-Fairchild 7
OSSEO — The Raiders (8-10) scored all of their runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings after facing a 5-0 deficit.
Pitcher/left fielder Caleb Pronschinske was 2 for 4 with two doubles and drove in three runs for Arcadia, which scored six runs in the fifth.
Second baseman Deklyn Grzadzielewski, third baseman Max Blashko also had two hits each for the Raiders, who also received two RBIs from Blashko, Austin Fernholz and Carson Wozney. Grzadzielewski also doubled and stole two bases.
Viroqua 4, Onalaska Luther 2
ONALASKA — The Knights (3-11-1, 1-7) made three errors that led to two unearned runs for the Blackhawks.
Pitcher/shortstop Jackson Kendall was 2 for 3 with three stolen bases for Luther, which also received an RBI from first baseman Michael Johnson and was within 3-2 after scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth.
