Tuesday softball report: Melrose-Mindoro scores three in seventh to take down C-FC

MELROSE — The Melrose-Mindoro High School softball team pieced together four hits, a walk and hit batter to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and beat Cochrane-Fountain City 4-3 in a Dairyland Conference game on Tuesday.

The Mustangs (8-1, 6-0) remained unbeaten in conference play and won for the second straight time since a nonconference loss to Ithaca on a two-run single with one out and a winning single with two outs to complete a comeback from a 3-0 deficit after two innings.

The winning rally was started with singles by shortstop Cooper Zeman and Bella Rozek and continued with a walk to Madeline Frauenkron hat loaded the bases with one out. Pitcher Emma Severson then tied the game with a two-run single to right field that played Zeman and Rozek.

A fielder’s choice retired Frauenkron at home, and Miranda Banse was hit by a pitch. Severson then scored from third when center fielder Kelsey Young reached on an infield single.

Young was 2 for 2 with the RBI, and Severson drove in two runs while allowing one earned run on seven hits and striking out two. Rozek also drove in two runs, and Opal Buchanan and Hailey Hiles each doubled for Melrose-Mindoro.

Onalaska 13, Holmen 3

HOLMEN — The second-place Hilltoppers (8-2, 5-1 MVC) ran their winning streak to five games with a rivalry win over the Vikings.

Onalaska broke away from a game it already led 7-3 with five runs in the top of the sixth inning and has outscored opponents by a 62-4 score during the current win streak.

Shortstop Qita Olson was 3 for 5 with a double and four RBIs for the Hilltoppers, who had 18 hits in a game that did go to the seventh inning. Pitcher Sydney Kraus also doubled three times during a 3-for-5 performance that included two runs driven in.

First baseman Zoey Lichty was 4 for 5 with two RBIs and left fielder Alexa Larson 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored. Center fielder Jenna Gansen and second baseman Kylie Gilhausen also had two hits apiece for the Hilltoppers.

Shortstop Macy Kline was 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Holmen (3-6, 3-2).

Caledonia 4, Chatfield 0

CALEDONIA — The Warriors (7-1) picked up their second straight shutout after a loss at St. Charles by scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning and twice in the bottom of the sixth.

Pitcher Avery Augedahl struck out nine and allowed three singles while walking three and went 2 for 4 with three runs driven in. First baseman Elsa Blum was 2 for 4, and shortstop Lily Wiebke drove in a run for Caledonia, which turned one Chatfield error into two unearned runs.

Aquinas 17, Logan 11 (8)

LA CROSSE — The Blugolds (4-6, 2-3) scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull away from the Rangers after a two-run bottom of the seventh.

Seven Aquinas batters had at least two hits, and Ella Deets hit a two-run home run to highlight the eighth. Deets was 4 for 5 with three doubles in addition to the homer, and Ava Scholze 4 or 6 with three RBIs.

The Blugolds had seven of their 20 hits in the eighth in winning their second game in a row and for the fourth time in five games.

Tessa Miskowski was 3 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs, and Kathryn Savoldelli 3 for 4 with two doubles for Aquinas, which also received a 3-for-6 performance and four RBI from Ava Fernholz.

Emma Bacon was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Maria Weber 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs for Logan (1-9, 0-5), which has lost three games in a row.

Central 4, Sparta 2

LA CROSSE — The RiverHawks (4-7, 2-3) won the game when pitcher Carmen Peterson doubled home Maleah Tomesh with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Peterson and first baseman Jaymeson Buxton were both 2 for 3 and second baseman Mady Young 2 for 4 for Central, which brought to an end its six-game losing streak.

Peterson struck out five without walking a batter and allowed one earned run on five hits while pitching a complete game. The winning double was her second of the game. Ellie Gillitzer added two stolen bases and Elena Wagner a double for the RiverHawks.

Arcadia 8, Eleva-Strum 4

ARCADIA — The Raiders (6-5) trailed 3-1 after the top of the fifth inning but responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the six to beat the Cardinals.

Catcher Tatum Drazkowski was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs for Arcadia, which had 11 hits, stole 15 bases and won for the third time in four games.

Shortstop/pitcher Layna Wozney was 2 for 3, and second baseman Madison Grotjahn drove in two runs for the Raiders, who also received two hits and two runs scored from center fielder Kiley Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick had four stolen bases. Amaya Schlesser and Kaitlyn Bremer added three apiece and Grotjahn and Wozney two each.

Drazkowski hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Grotjahn brought home the other two runs with a single. Wozney and Drazkowski had RBI doubles and Schlesser an RBI single in the sixth.
