Saturday track and field/golf report: Holmen girls win 20-team indoor meet at River Falls

RIVER FALLS — The Holmen High School girls track and field team won a championship, and its boys placed fifth at the Midwest Indoor Championships hosted by UW-River Falls on Saturday.

The Vikings scored 97 points in the girls competition and finished well ahead of second-place Osseo (Minn.), which had 55 in a field of 18 teams. Stillwater (Minn.) won the boys competition with 102, and Holmen checked in at 57.

Junior Lydia Lazarescu had a big day for the Vikings with victories in the 60- and 200-meter dash races. She was timed at 7.84 seconds as the top qualifier in the 60 and followed it up with a 7.76 that was followed pretty closely by junior teammate Abry Bloyer (7.98), who qualified third and finished third.

Lazarescu and Bloyer qualified first and ninth out of prelims in the 200 and finished first and sixth, respectively, with times of 25.81 and 27.87.

Junior Sabrina Lechnir added a victory in the 3,200 with a run of 11:35.93, and juniors Brenna Schmidt and Alivia Wickstrom added second-place finishes in the shot put and 60 hurdles. Schmidt had a throw of 37 feet, 7 inches, and Wickstrom had a time of 9.64. Lechnir also just missed her class record in the 1,600 with a fourth-place finish and time of 5:22.46.

The Vikings also received third-place points from a 3,200 relay team of Delilah Heacox, Naomi Wedan, Isabel Archer and Izzy Korthius (10:33.77) and from junior Kendall Kozlowski in the pole vault (9-6).

Junior Bela Waters set personal records in both the triple jump (33-1) and long jump (14-10.25), and Boyer sailed more than 1 foot past her previous best in the long jump with a 15-5.5. Wedan (fourth) and Ruby Kinsman (fifth) also provided a nice chunk of points with respective times of 2:32.45 and 2:33.03 in the 800.

Holmen’s boys were led by sophomore Jakai Ayed, who won the 60 hurdles in a school-record 8.2 and added a third-place performance in the long jump (20-6.5) with a personal record in that event. Junior Jack Barth added a win in the 400 (52.09), and sophomore Matthew Hoff was third in the 1,600 (4:33.81) and fifth in the 3,200 (10:08.98) and set a school record for his class in the 1,600.

Mineral Point Invitational

MINERAL POINT — Aquinas placed third among 20 teams at Dodge Point Country Club with a team score of 327.

Only defending WIAA Division 2 state champion Mineral Point (308) and Cambridge (313) finished better than the Blugolds.

James Siegert shot a 6-over par 76 to lead Aquinas, which also received an 81 from Luke Jones, an 83 from Jack Vogel and an 87 from Michael Jones.
