WEST SALEM — The West Salem High School softball team used a four-run third inning to pull away from Aquinas and set up a 7-3 nonconference victory over the visiting Blugolds on Friday.
The Panthers (2-0) scored all of their runs in the first four innings to give junior pitcher Josie Brudos plenty of a cushion the rest of the way. Brudos finished with 11 strikeouts and three walks while allowing five hits and two earned runs during a complete game.
Senior second baseman MacLaine Heilman was 4 for 4 with two doubles, a stolen base and a run scored for West Salem, which finished with 10 hits and took advantage of four Aquinas errors for three unearned runs.
Senior first baseman Makena Ihle was 3 for 4 with two runs driven in, Brudos stole two bases and scored twice, and Megan Johnson and Briauna Mathison each scored twice for the Panthers.
Tessa Miskowski and Abby Ziolkowski each drove in a run for the Blugolds (0-3), who scored all three of their runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
