Powerlifting: Central’s Travon Thompson, Onalaska’s Teague Simmons highlight WHSPA West Coast Regional

HOLMEN — La Crosse Central High School senior Travon Thompson had a squat of 635 pounds, a bench press of 275 and a dead lift of 600 for a total weight of 1,510 pounds to provide one of many highlights during the WHSPA West Coast Regional at Holmen’s Bernie L. Ferry Fieldhouse on Saturday.

More than 300 powerlifters converged on the school and split into weight divisions to test their limits on three lifts as a large crowd looked on and cheered for schools and favorites.

Thompson won his 275-plus division over Logan’s second-place Eli Hanan (1,135 pounds).

Onalaska’s Teague Simmons also had a big day in his 275 division with lifts of 600 in the squat, 305 on the bench and 570 in the dead lift for a winning total of 1,475 pounds. Logan’s Wes McGough was third in that division (1,050).

Other local boys division winners included Central’s Davis Harrison (114-pound class, 535 pounds lifted), Central’s Xavier Stockert (123 class, 645 pounds), Central’s Mason Klonecki (165 class, 1,105 pounds), Central’s Isaac Stuteman (181 class, 1,040 pounds), Central’s Kaeden Apuan (198 class, 1,265 pounds) and Central’s Nathaniel Apuan (242 class, 1,310 pounds).

Girls varsity champions were Holmen’s Adriana Vang (97 class, 445 pounds), Central’s Gracie Duncanson (114 class, 560 pounds), Onalaska’s Gwen Marso (148 class, 745 pounds), Central’s Eiji Roche (165 class, 680 pounds) and Central’s Chiadikobi Nduka (181 class, 660 pounds).
