Friday’s wrestling/gymnastics report: Aquinas 2nd in 33-team meet at Mequon; West Salem co-op wins Effinger Invitational

MEQUON — The Aquinas High School wrestling team received an individual championship from Roger Flege and runner-up finishes from Martez Sheard and Tyson Martin to place second at the 33-team Highlander Invitational hosted by Mequon Homestead on Friday.

The Blugolds scored 305.5 team points and were beaten only by Wisconsin Rapids (381.5). Aquinas held off third-place Germantown (290.5) and fourth-place Waukesha West (277).

Flege (32-3), a junior, won twice by pin and twice by technical fall to qualify for the championship bout at 132 pounds. He then beat Plymouth’s Landen Ramsey (21-6) 7-2 for the title.

Martin (32-2), a senior, pinned his first two opponents in less than a minute, then won by technical fall in 1:05 and 59 seconds in the quarterfinals and semifinals at 215. Port Washington’s Garett Kawczynski (32-2), the WIAA Division 1 state runner-up at 215 last season, handed him a 4-2 loss in the final.

Sheard (27-3), a freshman, won by technical fall twice before a pin in the quarterfinal and technical fall in the semifinal at 120. West Bend West’s Ethan Bast (31-2) beat Sheard by major decision to win the backet.

The Blugolds also received fourth-place performances from Trevor Paulson (25-9) at 150 and Waylon Hargrove (24-5) at 157. Tyler Paulson (24-8) was sixth at 126, Will Flottmeyer (6-4) was sixth at 285, Chase Schams (22-10) was eighth at 285, and Lincoln Stanek (27-6) was ninth at 106.

GYMNASTICS

Tami Effinger Invitational

The West Salem/Aquinas/Bangor co-op emerged victorious with a team score of 140.9 to hold off the G-E-T co-op (136.625 and Westby/Viroqua/Cashton/De Soto (133.5). Onalaska/Luther was fourth (133.1) and Sparta fifth (132.225).

Senior Kennedy Garbers was fourth all-around (35.65). The top-all-around performance came from Sparta’s Gabrielle Bjorkman (36.625).

Garbers was followed by teammate Camdyn Lyga (35.0) in fifth place.

Garbers won the uneven bars (9.1), was second on the balance beam (9.2), while Lyga won the floor exercise (9.5) and was second on the vault (9.1).

Onalaska/Luther’s Eva Dryer and Marlie Krause were third and fourth, respectively, on the balance beam with scores of 8.925 and 8.9. Dryer was also third on the floor (9.45).

West Salem’s Olivia Maki was third on the vault (9.05), teammate Hayden Rohde was fourth on the bars (8.925) and Onalaska/Luther’s Allison Komperud was fifth on the bars (8.725).

Logan/Central was sixth as a team (122.775) and led by Danika Parnell’s fifth-place performance on the floor (9.35).
