HOLMEN — The Holmen High School girls basketball team needed two overtimes, but big 3-pointers by Makenzie Nunemacher and Imani Toso in the second overtime gave the Vikings their first season sweep of Onalaska in 13 years on Thursday.
The 3s by Nunemacher and Toso were the first two baskets of the second overtime and propelled Holmen to 53-46 MVC win over the Hilltoppers at the Bernie L. Ferry Fieldhouse.
The Vikings (7-7, 4-2) took over sole possession of third place in the conference and swept the regular-season series with Onalaska (7-8, 3-3) for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
The first overtime came about after Onalaska freshman Kayla Ketelhut scored in the lane to force a 42-42 tie with 1 minutes, 24 seconds left in regulation. Holmen senior Danica Rebhahn forced the second four-minute overtime when she knocked down a 3-pointer to tie the score at 45 with 2:26 left in the first overtime.
Toso ended up with a team-high 15 points for Holmen, which also had junior Macy Kline (13 points), Nunemacher (11) and Rebhahn (10) in double figures. The Hilltoppers packed their zone defense around junior Charley Casey and held her to four points, but she also pulled down 15 rebounds.
Ketelhut had 16 points and Finley Walters 15 for Onalaska, which found itself in an early 10-0 hole and was only able to get a lead twice. The Hilltoppers held their biggest lead at 45-42 in the first overtime after a free throw by Natalie Marso and successful drive to the basket by Jenna Gansen.
West Salem 68, Menomonie 38
WEST SALEM — The Panthers (12-3) won for the fourth time in five games by taking down the Mustangs (9-7).
West Salem pulled away from a nine-point halftime lead by holding Menomonie to 14 second-half points.
Senior Megan Johnson scored 24 points and had 17 of those in the first half. Junior Josie Brudos made two of her three 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 16 points for West Salem.
Makena Ihle added nine and Sydney Quick eight for the Panthers, who host Westby on Friday.
Arcadia 54, Westby 32
ARCADIA — The third-place Raiders (8-6, 6-2) completed a regular-season sweep of the Norsemen by outscoring them by 18 points in the second half.
Sophomores Madison Grotjahn and Tatum Drazkowski each scored 18 points for Arcadia in its second straight victory. Both scored eight points in the first half and 10 in the second. Drazkowski made two 3-pointers and Grotjahn one.
Justine Sonsalla also made a 3-pointer and had seven of her nine points in the first half for the Raiders.
