ARCADIA — The Arcadia High School boys basketball team prepared to face an unbeaten team that was scoring more than 70 points per game on Thursday.
Cochrane-Fountain City had, in fact, scored at least 80 points four times while winning its first 10 games, but the Raiders had big defensive plans at the Wanek Center.
Arcadia set the tone it wanted on the way to beating the visiting Pirates 66-54.
“We knew we had to be good at that (defensive) end,” Arcadia coach Ryan Sonnentag said in a message after the game. “We keep a stat about getting three stops in a row. We have a goal for each half of how many of those we want.
“We hit our game goal in the first half and finished with nine, a season high for us.”
Freshman Deklyn Grzadzielewski scored a team-high 18 points and made four first-half 3-pointers for the Raiders (6-7), who snapped a two-game losing streak and have now won two of their past four.
Senior Kaiden Rotering added 16 points, and sophomore Carter Wegman added 12 with three 3s.
The Pirates (10-1) entered the game with a one-two scoring punch of Cameron Lipinski and Peter Ehrat, which was responsible for 43.2 points per game. Sonnentag called on Wegman and Ted Teske for their defensive assignments, and they held them to a combined 29.
Onalaska 84, Logan 52
ONALASKA — The Hilltoppers (11-2, 4-1) took over sole possession of first place in the MVC by taking care of the Rangers (4-8, 0-4).
Freshman Tyler Kowal scored a game-high 21 points for Onalaska, which took advantage of Holmen’s loss at La Crosse Central to take over the MVC lead.
Junior Ian Kowal and senior Broden Steiner each had 13 points, and junior Tristan Molling added 11.
Logan was led by senior Bradley Check and sophomore Bubba Leaver. Both scored 14 points.
